Combatting Covid-19's effect on Children

by Maryam Shaikh Blogger by Passion
Throughout the pandemic, COVID-19 cases and deaths have been proportionately lower in children, adolescents, and young adults, though their tendency to have fewer and milder symptoms may have resulted in fewer tests being performed. Although the evidence is inconclusive, it is likely that up to 50% of infected children are asymptomatic.

According to statistics reported to WHO between 30 December 2019 and 6 September 2021, children under the age of five accounted for the fewest illnesses among under 24-year-olds, accounting for just 1.8 percent of worldwide cases. Young people aged 5 to 15 and those aged 15 to 24 made up 6.2 percent and 14.3 percent of all cases, respectively. COVID-19 fatalities in all of these age categories accounted for less than 0.5 percent of all COVID-19 deaths worldwide.

So, are kids more likely to catch the virus in the first place? A number of factors influence your chances of contracting SARS-CoV-2, including your personal biology, the types of environments you're exposed to, such as at work or school, and the intensity of that exposure, which is influenced by community transmission and how well people follow public health and social measures. Many studies have tried to evaluate the extent of SARS-CoV-2 exposure in children by looking at antibody levels in their blood or the quantity of virus shed by afflicted children, but the results have been mixed.

This might be because infection control measures, as well as people's adherence to them, have changed over time, making it difficult to compare data collected at different eras. Children of all ages can and do contract the virus and pass it on to others. The fact that more teens than younger children have tested positive for COVID-19 might indicate that the virus has an easier time invading their bodies. It's presently being investigated if this holds true for subsequent versions.
