Colored Pencil Techniques and How to Choose it
What
are colored pencils?
Color pencils comprises of a wooden
shaft, which is loaded with pigment that is colored. This pigment is bonded by a
blinder, which when it is spread via a surface, transmits color. As a medium,
they are the perfect pen pencil for
most artists. This is relative because they are relatively inexpensive,
available widely and portable. If they are used properly or correctly, these colored,
pencils can be loaded with color and be an image of a particular painting.
How
to Use Colored Pencils
The use of colored pencils can be in several ways. If they are used correctly,
they produce an effect of a fully colored painting. The following tips of the
techniques should help you out.
Techniques
of Colored Pencils
Color
Heavy: Your color
should be built gradually to make them complex and intense. You should not rely
on the value of the paper to make them shades and tints or at least build up
your color gradually so that the colors are intense and complex. Don't
rely on the value of your paper to make your tints and shades.
Layer
Your Colors: Many layers of
your color should be built. The application of one color does not bring
success. The layering and building up of your colors will make your colors look
realistic and complex.
Mix
Your Colors: When any
colored medium is used, the color should always be mixed. Colored pencils should not be different too. For example, when
drawing grass, use yellow, blue, and green instead of the manufactured green.
Outline
Last: The outline of
any work should be kept until the drawing has been finished. Colored pencils can easily overlap
themselves. This enables you to do the outlining of the object last.
Take Your Time: Time is needed
when using Colored Pencils. You must work deliberately. It takes
time to construct a well-drawn colored
pencil image.
Surfaces for Colored Pencils
Colored pencils can be used on any
surface. Traditional surfaces such as colored papers, drawing papers, tag
board, rag paper, cardboard, watercolor paper and illustration board. Attention
should be paid to the tooth or texture of the paper, when you are choosing your
surface. How the colored pencils appear on the surface will be determined on
the texture of the paper.
Variety of Quality among Brands of
Colored Pencils
Colored pencils are of different brands.
Some are better that the others. Perhaps you are a novice in using colored
pencils; I would recommend you buy a cheaper brand such as Crayola. Therefore,
as you progress, you can go for higher quality brands such as Prismacolor. They
are the best in colored pencils. The pigment is concentrated and soft.
