Clubhouse's DM function is now available

by Alicia Brown Application Developer

On Wednesday, the Clubhouse social audio app released Backchannel, a direct messaging tool that allows one-to-one and group text discussions. The invite-only app, which grew rapidly during the COVID-19 epidemic, now faces competition from a slew of tech giants, including Facebook, Twitter, and Spotify, all of which are releasing comparable audio chat services.

Since debuting on Android in late May, Clubhouse has attracted more than 8 million new members, according to the company. One of the most desired additions, according to the company, is the ability to direct messages.

Backchannel

Backchannel, the social audio company's direct messaging function, is now available to all users on iOS and Android. Users can communicate one-on-one, in groups, and send links for the time being. They can't transmit photos or videos now, but a spokesman says that functionality, as well as a "few more things," is on the way. There will also be a secondary inbox where message requests can be stored if desired.

The feature is intended to allow moderators to communicate with one another in a live room, to connect individuals after an event, and to promote text discussions that would otherwise require the use of a separate app. However, we can't say this is a particularly surprising development: The functionality was unintentionally released by Clubhouse in June.

This is a significant achievement for the app, which has already been downloaded over 8 million times on Android smartphones and has over 500,000 rooms created every day, according to the firm.

Backchannel brings Clubhouse up to speed and ensures users keep their conversations, and more of their social lives, on the app. Its competitors, notably Twitter Spaces and Facebook Live Audio Rooms, both allow people to text chat while also running or participating in an audio conversation, so users can keep their conversations, and more of their social lives, on the app.

Bottom Line

Clubhouse’s popularity is sure to increase after this new feature. The social app was already quite popular, the addition of “DM” or “Backchannel” will make it easier for users to data share hence the appeal of the app will automatically increase.
