Cite a Website in APA 6th Edition Citation Style With No Author

by Emily Moore Writer

In case of the material is from a newspaper website that does not have any author, below is the format for bibliographic reference:

  1. The APA bibliographic references should be double-spaced, as well as indented for half an inch after every line.
  2. In case there is no author, the title of the article will come first.
  3. For writing the titles of a newspaper, italics should be used with the “headline” style that will be applied for capitalizing the title. In order to avoid any URL that is non-functional, it is important to use the URL of the homepage of the newspaper.
  4. Including the date of retrieval is no longer necessary.

For example-

Barcelona to ban the burqa in municipal buildings. (2010, June 14). Retrieved from gulfnews.com

For in-text citations, the following things need to be kept in mind:

  •  The citations that are being used, need to be placed according to the context of the discussion that is being written. This shall also include the use of the last name of the author along with the date on which the article was published.
  •  In those cases when the work does not have any identified author, the citation should contain the in-text of the first few words that were written in the article with the help of double quotation marks, the capitalization being in “headline-style”. The date of publication should also be mentioned in the in-text citations.
For example-

(“Barcelona to Ban Burqa,” 2010)

  • Another manner in which one can make integration in the in-text citation is with the help of a narrative.
  • It is important to mention that there should be a complete match between the list containing the references and the citation that is put in parenthesis. Hence, the title of the article must be included in the place where the name of the author was supposed to be mentioned.
For example-

“Barcelona to Ban Burqa” (2010) mentions that the step taken is because of the fact that all kinds of dresses impede identification.

Citing a website without any author or date of publication

In case of the material is from a website that does not have any author, below is the format for bibliographic reference:

  • The bibliographic references need to be double spaced along with a half-inch of indentation after every line.
  • For those cases when there is no author for the article, the title of the article should come in the first place.
  • If the citation is without any date, the abbreviation n.d. should be used.
  • It is not necessary to include the date of retrieval in this case.

For example-

United Arab Emirates architecture. (n.d). retrieved from https://www.uaeinteract.com

For in-text citations, the following instructions should be followed:

  • The placing of the citations should be made in line with the context of the discussion that is done by using the last name of the author along with the date when the article was published.
  • In cases when the author has not been identified, the first few words of the article should be in-texted with the use of double quotation marks, along with the “headline-style” capitalization. The in-text citation should also include the year when the article has been published.

For example-

(“United Arab Emirates Architecture,” n.d.)

  • As an alternative, the citation can be integrated into the sentence with the help of a narrative.
  • There should be a match between the reference list that has been provided and the citation that has been put in parenthesis. Thus, the title of the article will be placed in the place of the name of the author in the essay.

For example-

“United Arab Emirates Architecture” (n.d.) describes the kind of building materials that were used in the early settlements.

For works who have an anonymous author

For citing the works of an anonymous author, the citation should be done by in-texting the word “Anonymous” along with a comma followed by the date of publication.

(Anonymous, 2010)

The reference list should be placed in an alphabetical manner.
