Choosing the Best Concrete Variety for Your Project

by Kevin Smith Author

If you are about to begin a renovation or construction project and are looking to use concrete you may think one type fits all. However, there are several options to choose from. Here is some more information about concrete mixes and how to choose the right variety for your next project.

Concrete versus Cement

The first deviation you should know is the difference between concrete and cement. Cement is the dry powder that is mixed with sand, gravel, and water to produce concrete. The cement mixes contain either chemical or mineral additives to help enhance the strength and durability of the concrete.

The three most popular types of cement used to make concrete are Portland, Masonry, and Mortar. Portland cement is a popular variety and is made of limestone, clay, and iron. Masonry cement is often used for commercial grade projects and is used to set stone and bricks as a binding agent. Mortar cement mix is a blend of water, masonry cement, and sand. Mortar creates a strong bond and is well suited for patching projects.

Types of Concrete

If you do not want to mix your own concrete blend there are quality ready made options available. These are usually a premixed combination of cement, sand, and gravel. The three most popular varieties that are available when it comes to mixes are fast setting, high strength, and crack resistant.

Fast setting concrete lives up to its moniker and is best for setting posts or sections that need to be used quickly. It can be set for use in as little as 20 to 40 minutes. High strength is suited for load bearing tasks, like foundation work, or bases for heavy machinery. It will take around 10-12 hours to be fully set. Crack resistant is most commonly used on sidewalks, patios, and other high traffic areas that are prone to cracking. If you are unsure which type will work best for your project you can work with your local hardware store or masonry professionals.

Detailed Concrete Analysis

If your project is a complex operation that has to be perfect, you can work with a laboratory and get detailed concrete analysis done. They can examine concrete thin sections and provide a comprehensive report of the material.

No matter whether you mix the concrete yourself or buy ready-made mixes, you will want to exercise some safety tips. You should lift with your legs and reduce strain on your back. You should cover your skin to protect it from irritation, and use a mask to protect your lungs from dust. So whether you are paving a new patio, or having concrete thin sections examined for a comprehensive project, there are some quality options available to you for your next renovation or construction endeavor.
