You need to have very clearly in your mind the features you are looking for in a second hand caravan when you decide to purchase used caravans in Townsville. You don’t want someone pulling a fast one on you, leaving you with a caravan that quickly falls apart and doesn’t work properly. There are many considerations to keep in mind when narrowing down your options. Here is some advice that could help you with that process.

Rust

Older caravans almost always have some form of rust. Normally it is to be found underneath the arches and in the joins of the vehicle. It is obvious to the eye if rust has been badly repaired and it will return with a vengeance. You should check the whole vehicle for less conspicuous signs of rust such as paint bubbles and signs of filler.

Leaks

Doors that have rubber seal can often deteriorate over time. This lets water and wind come inside the vehicle. If the caravan has been converted, it is vital to check the joins to ensure that there are no leakages. Other areas to check are around windows and the pipes. Damp marks and walls that are discoloured can be a good give away of water damage.

Mechanics

Just like when buying a car, the engine needs to be in good working condition. You should get a comprehensive list of all mechanical repairs if possible. Keep an eye out for any of the major parts that have been recently replaced. If components such as the fan belt have been replaced within the last year, this means that they will not have to be replaced in the near future. Always check components for signs of wear or damage. The tyres should have no wear on the threads. Unusual patterns can be a signal that the steering alignment may be off line, something which would need to be fixed immediately. The mileage can be a tell tail sign of how much use the caravan has had. A lot of people only use their caravans a few times a year, usually in the summer months and will have a low mileage as a result.

Test Drive

Always ask for a test drive before you make a purchase. This ensures that the vehicle is the right for you and has no operational problems. Try to test drive it on similar terrain to that on which you would be regularly using it on.
