Choosing Commercial Chiller Air Cooled Units

by Smart Cool Some Industrial Processes Require Low-Temperature
Commercial chillers hold an important role in maintaining a number of different buildings. The right cooler will work to maintain the temperature of appliances and products. They are used to keep perishable items fresh and to sustain the correct environment for certain medications and vaccines. It’s clear that the right chiller air cooled unit can hold a big role when chosen and installed correctly.

Air or Water

One of the first things to determine as you consider the various chillers on the market is whether an air cooled chiller or a water cooled chiller will be most appropriate. There are some subtle differences between the two. For example, the air cooled unit requires less work for ongoing maintenance. Another difference is that the air cooled unit can do its work without the assistance of a cooling tower or the condenser water pump. Another important difference is that a water cooled unit transfers power less efficiently than the other option. This is because wet surfaces transfer heat much more efficiently than dry surfaces. These differences often lead consumers to choose the air cooled chillers for their applications.

Stationary, Central, or Portable

The next decision you may be faced with is which of the air cooled models to choose. There are stationary and portable coolers, central systems and custom models. Stationary units will be used where additional discharged heat isn’t a factor. This consideration typically means that the unit will stay in one place. The portable chillers hold all of the components necessary for operation, so that they can be moved from one position to another. Those chillers that are part of a central system can be used to maintain multiple processes in the same plant and at the same time. If the application in your plant or facility requires a combination or different configuration, you might take a look at an investment in a custom chiller air cooled unit.

Type of Chiller

Another decision will involve the types of commercial chillers. For example, there are blast chillers to freeze perishables quickly and chillers used to keep display freezers at a steady temperature. There are air conditioning packages, industrial refrigeration, and cooling equipment packaged up and ready for rentals. You’ll have to carefully consider the needs of your application so that you can identify the specific type of chiller that will deliver all of the requirements you need.

Space Considerations

The next step is to ascertain that you have enough space for the chiller unit you’ve chosen. You’ll want to be sure that your unit is big enough to handle the work you have in mind, but if you purchase a unit that is too big you’ll pay more than you need in energy costs and you’ll have to give up some of your valuable floor space. Choose the chiller air cooled unit that is just large enough for your purposes. Before spending money on the unit, invest in a CAD drawing of your space. You can use this application to experiment with the various positioning options. The last thing to bear in mind is that this purchase represents a sizeable investment, so take time to review each of your decisions before making a final choice.
