Choosing between a patio and decking

by David K. Business Development
When it comes to enhancing your outdoor living space, choosing between a patio and decking can be a daunting task. Both options have their own unique advantages and disadvantages. In this article, we’ll explore the pros and cons of patios and decking to help you make an informed decision. There are also distinct advantages and disadvantages between softwood timber decking, hardwood and composite deck boards.
Both composite and hardwood decking are low-maintenance deck options, so references in the article to composite can apply to hardwood decking too.

Patios
A patio is a paved outdoor area that can be made from various materials such as concrete, pavers, or natural stone. Here are some advantages and disadvantages of patios:

Advantages:
 - Low maintenance: Patios are low maintenance and require little upkeep.
 - Durability: Patios are durable and can withstand harsh weather conditions.
 - Versatility: Patios can be designed to fit any shape or size of outdoor space.

Disadvantages:
 - Cost: Patios can be expensive to install, especially if you choose high-end materials such as marble, porcelain or granite.
 - Limited design options: Patios have limited design options compared to decking.
 - Uneven surfaces: Patios can sometimes have uneven surfaces depending on the material used.

Decking
A deck is a raised outdoor platform made from wood or composite materials. Here are some advantages and disadvantages of decking:

Advantages:
 - Aesthetics: Decking adds a natural and rustic feel to your outdoor space.
 - Versatility: Decking can be designed to fit any shape or size of outdoor space.
 - Design options: Decking comes in various colours, styles, and finishes, giving you more design options.
- Cost: for steep sloping gardens, decking can be constructed on a raised frame, which can compensate for very different heights in garden levels without the need to excavate and remove large quantities of earth.

 Disadvantages:
 - High maintenance: Decking requires regular cleaning, sealing, and staining maintenance.
 - Durability: Decking may not be as durable as patios and can be prone to rotting, warping, and splintering.
 - Cost: Decking can be expensive to install, especially if you choose high-end materials.

The disadvantages listed above mainly apply to softwood timber decking, as composite decking is a much lower maintenance option. However, the high-end materials referenced on cost refer to composite and hardwood decking.

Choosing between a patio and decking ultimately depends on your preferences and budget. A patio might be the way to go if you’re looking for a low-maintenance and durable option. Decking might be the way to go if you’re looking for a natural and rustic feel to your outdoor space or have a steep garden sloping down from the back of your house.
As professional decking installers can be constructed at various heights, decking can provide additional space outdoors as a new patio or terrace. Fitted with balustrades and deck lights will provide a whole new entertaining area that can be used day or night.
Landscaping companies can often provide these and other services, and depending on the size and shape of your garden, there may be scope for both. A landscaper should be have skilled patio installers within their team, and are therefore a good option to come and provide a quote. They may be a little more expensive than a company that specialises in only one though. Whichever option you choose, do make sure to hire professionals to ensure proper installation and long-lasting results.
