Cellar and Basement Damp Quick Guide
by Kate Winslet Im a blogger by passionMay be many peoples faces this issue, and it is a most common issue you need to hire damp survey experts for guidance. If you have a wet basement, you are very lucky. It was built
to be damp. It did exactly what it was designed to do Keep cool.
Back in the days when it was built, they didn't
refrigerators, freezers and frozen food counters in supermarkets. So when Dad
brought home the bacon, it's just what he did, and whopped over a hook in the
basement, covered with a muslin bag to stay cool. He did the same with his
bottle of beer or cider. Mom would have a big bowl on the settlas that was made
pottery - glass inside, like a pot outside. He was in the water, it stayed wet
and the evaporation of water from the pot kept inside the milk fresh. They
could have too fall of coal, so that food stored one hand, coal another. All
very organized,
Nowadays, everyone wants to waterproof basement - if you
have a large space in there that you can not use, there is the pressure to do
it in a room. A wet basement is not much use to anyone - if you store things
there, they manky.
So what are you doing Well, the first thing is to break it.
You need a good air flow through - I bet it is not at present. Controlled
moisture extraction must ensure that it remains dry. You need dry air from the
house to pull - it keeps the pleasant and dry. You must ensure that there is no
modern materials on the wall - like plastic masonry paints, cement render,
plaster - because they all fall out and create the inevitable symptoms of
rising damp
If you really can not get enough dry like that, then you may
need to opt for extreme measures like the use of a mentoring system, or a
drainage system of trade cavity. We can investigate and advise on your options
- but the ventilation and opening up are always first on our list, and too
cheap!
Over the past 10 years, Pete has not had both a tank or
moisture resistant with a cellar or basement. Still, there is a way to dry -
inevitably using good ventilation controlled humidity. You will notice a
difference in your home too - reduced levels of moisture in the basement will
result in a warm, dry house above.
