India, being a symbol of unity in diversity is home to innumerable people from different castes and religions. With this, it brings in the joy to celebrate multiple festivals. Diwali is one of the most widely celebrated festivals across India. Though it is mainly for the Hindus, it is celebrated with great joy among people of all religions. Also known as the Festival of Lights, Diwali is marked by bursting crackers on the streets in huge amounts, and also in some places people gamble inside their homes.

People are seen feasting upon the Gold coins and jewelry in the markets, along with buying expensive clothes to wear on the festival. Women and children are seen shopping for costly electronics which they either get for themselves, or to gift to their relatives and friends. The festival reminds people about the return of Lord Ram to his kingdom after the completion of his exile which lasted for 14 years. He was welcomed with diyas and lights and the whole town looked bright. This came as a tradition and people decorate their homes with lightings, light diyas at the entrance of their homes and in their rooms. Family owners even get their homes whitewashed to enhance the charm, and worship Goddess Lakshmi.

During the evening Hindu families are seen preparing for a religious family gathering. They decorate the new idols of Lord Ganesha and Goddess Lakshmi, worship them, and pray for bringing in wealth and prosperity in their homes. People believe that the doors and windows should be well decorated and left open to welcome the Goddess. Girls and women are also seen preparing Rangolis at the center of their home, near the idols of God, or at the entrance. These look beautiful with bright colors and unique designs and generally are the best way to welcome friends and relatives.

One unique aspect of this festival is that it marks the beginning of winters, and a new financial year especially for Hindus and businessmen, shopkeepers, and traders, wherein people worship their account book. Basically, the festival marks the victory of good over evil, which is a reason to celebrate. People leave their house lit even on the night of Diwali, as they believe that this is the best way to welcome God. This is followed by the festival for brothers and sisters – Bhaai Dooj. On this day, sisters cook delicious meals for their brothers, and receive money and gifts in return. No matter how much the world may change, the culture and traditions of celebrating Diwali have continued to be the same enthusiastic one, and will be the same for the years to come. This is one festival that sees the sky lit with bright lights of the crackers.
