Maharashtra, rightly lives up to its name. This great and prominent state of India is home to the city of dreams - Mumbai, the Orange capital of India -Nagpur, the Queen of the Deccan- Pune, and so much more. Just as the sub-cultures of the different regions, the Maharashtrian food platter is also very diverse. From Solapuri Peanut Chutney, Misal Pav, Poha, to Malvani Fish and Konkani Chicken Curry and so on!

New Year’s Eve is one time when we all get together with our families and friends and welcome the coming year with joy, love and food!  Preparing some Authentic Maharashtrian dishes for your New Year’s celebration can never go wrong and indeed add a touch of variety to your normal cuisine.

“Sweet, Spicy, Sour, you name it, you get it” is what best describes the yummi-licous feast Maharashtra has to offer! Let’s just dive into all the lip-smacking dishes you can prepare this New Year!

1.       Thalipeeth

A multigrain flatbread that is made using a flour which is known as Thalipeeth Bhajani, is a healthy alternative to your regular roti or paratha. The bhajani is made with roasted grains and dals. Make it using the multigrain flour, some spices, chopped onions and green chillies and serve it hot with yogurt, pickle or some garlic chutney!

2.       Misal Pav

The king of Maharashtrian Street food needs no introduction! Made with a curry of legumes or sprouts, served with farsan, chopped onions and the Pav! You can never go wrong with this one and it is sure to spice up things a little!

3.        Sol Kadhi

After the hot and spicy Misal Pav, you definitely need something to cool things down and what better than Sol Kadhi ? This refreshingly soothing drink is made with Kokum Agal and coconut milk, some garlic, green chili, cumin and some coriander sprigs. A natural digestive and coolant, this is a must try for everyone.

4.       Malvani Chicken/Fish Curry with Bhakri

The ultimate feast food made in every Maharashtrian household! Malvani masala comes from the Malvan region located along the beautiful Konkan coastline. The masala is made with all the fragrant spices like red chili, black mustard, black pepper and some whole spices. Using the Malvani masala, make your regular chicken curry with a touch of difference and a sure shot winner ! Serve with Bhakri made with Tandul Peeth (rice flour)

5.       Puran Poli

No celebration is complete without something sweet and this is where Puran Poli takes the lead! A sweet Indian flatbread made with a filling of chana dal, jaggery, nutmeg rolled into a dough made with wheat flour. Pro tip: Serve hot with a little bit of Ghee on top!
