Cast Iron manhole cover

by Ashish K. Articles
Manholes are an important construction element that offers a number of functions. They allow maintenance workers to access the underground piping and the telecom lines that have been laid out under the roads. These manhole, however, need to be covered so that a pedestrian crossing the road or walking on the sidewalk might not fall into it accidentally. These manhole covers are also necessary because they help the cars to run smoothly on the roads without having the fear that their tires might get stuck in. Removing a manhole cover requires a great deal of force that can affect the shoulders, knees, and back. Replacing the cover may require even more force. Cast iron manhole covers are becoming very popular alternatives in wastewater collection systems, sewer systems, septic systems, and industrial applications.

Traditionally, manholes covers are made of cast iron. Manhole covers are often made out of cast iron, concrete or a combination of the two. This makes them inexpensive, strong, and heavy. However, in the viewpoint of pipe maintenance, frequent opening of manhole covers has to be carried out. Cast iron is the product which is being shielded from the rust and also it is extremely solid adequate to take high loads. Manhole lids that have popped off are a big problem and liability for utilities. Sewer backups, storms, flooding, vandals and even truck tires can cause the lids to be knocked out of place.  Cast iron manhole covers or lids are typically held in place by the weight of the lid.

These covers come in various designs and materials, each offering a different set of features and advantages. It is the material of the cover that determines how much load the cover can bear and weather it can stand the test of time. Nowadays, the “cast iron manhole covers” have gained immense popularity because of their high load ability and a higher life span than the traditional covers.

Cast Iron, because of the increased strength and ductility is used in more engineered applications. But perhaps the greatest advantage of cast iron is the ease with which they can be handled by workers. Manhole covers utilizing innovative materials, and techniques may require a greater initial investment than traditional products. Optimized design, modern manufacturing, material choice, and ergonomics all combine to create products that protect critical public infrastructure and promote safer environments for the workers that handle them.
