Explanatory case study

A case study that is explanatory will emphasise on explaining a phenomenon or question. It generally aims to answer the ‘how' and ‘why' questions. It works typically with real-life phenomenon and situations. This type of case study analyses the data on both surface level and deep level which aids in the formulation of future theories.

 Exploratory case study

An exploratory case study acts as a precursor to larger and more intensive research, and its main aim is to prove that further research is needed into the matter. It aims to uncover the ‘what’ and ‘who’ questions. In this type of study small-scale data collection and fieldwork is done before the formulation of the hypothesis or the research question. Generally, in psychology and social sciences, these type of case studies are conducted for they open up newer avenues of research.

Descriptive case study

The descriptive case study describes the natural phenomenon which occurs within the scope of the data in question. The researcher describes the data as it happens. The descriptive study has some challenges the main one being that the researcher must have a descriptive theory at the start, to support the description of the phenomenon in question.  Now if that is in the failing, then there is a high chance that the description was not thorough enough and problems during the project may occur.

The different subjects of case studies

Before starting with case study writing for pestel analysis, one needs to understand the various subjects that are used in case studies. There are five different types of subjects used in a case study, namely:

Person: In this type of case study, the study is conducted by an individual. Here different types of research method are performed upon an individual to determine a single outcome.

Group: In this type of case study, the study is conducted on a group of people. This group can be a group of friends, a family or even a randomly chosen assortment of people.

Location: In this type of study, the focus is on a specific area, how and why people use the location or place. Studies can also be conducted on locations that are facing some change or experiencing some drastic phenomenon.

Organization: In this type of study, the focus is on an organisation or company. It could include a particular aspect of the company such as its work culture, its performance in a specific period, its employees or even some event that that has taken place there.

Event: In this type of study, the study is conducted upon an event. The even may be cultural or societal, organised or spontaneous. It aims to find in an event, how the event affects the people who are affected by it.

Case studies are exciting research methods that resemble storytelling. Albeit they can sometimes be controversial methods of data collection for they lack in robustness as a research method, but they are a popular method in social sciences studies especially in those cases where one needs explain social behaviours.
