Career Training For High School Grads 2023: Get Ontario MedSpa Certification

Did you know that 9 out of 10 "easy new careers" are a lie?

I didn't, I just made that up, but it sounds about right, in my experience.

Every time I hear someone tell me about "how easy it is to change careers," I just want to scream.

They're generally talking about one of two things - either going to school for at least 4 years or some weird online job that raises more red flags than an amusement park.

I guess they might be right about it being easy... if you have the spare time and money to spend 4 years in school, but that's just not me. I'm also not a big fan of red flags and questionable online jobs, so I had to find something totally different - and I did.

It's a school that lets you do most of your learning online, at your own pace, before doing in-person, hands-on, practical training at one of their brick-and-mortar locations. Maybe you've heard of it, it's the Dermysk Medical Aesthetics Academy, and there are a few of them scattered across Canada.

Here's how it works.

First, they split their courses into two sections, educational and practical, then they found the most effective way to teach each section.

For the education portion, it's schoolwork, and they found the best option is to give you all the time you need to work on it, from anywhere with an internet connection. You can take as long as you need to finish the online modules, or you can hammer them out in no time - it's entirely up to you.

When you're done, you'll have a solid understanding of the physics and biology behind popular medical aesthetic procedures, and the medical aesthetics industry. That means you're ready to start the fun part and schedule your practical training.

Assuming you've enrolled in the Basic course, which only requires a high school diploma or relevant work experience - you'll be expected to spend one-week training in-person at the nearest Academy location. There's probably one near you right now because they're sprinkled all over the country, but you can always check on their website to be sure.

The week you spend training at the Academy is practically guaranteed to be exciting and fun - but it's also a lot of work, and a lot of learning, all packed into a tight schedule. In that one week, they want to make sure that you're not just "certified," but also comfortable, experienced, and capable, with all of the tools and procedures.

"Which procedures?" I'm going to pretend you asked.

Well, depending on the course, you'll learn different things, but the Basic course is jam-packed with around a dozen certifications for techniques like fractional ablation, radiofrequency rejuvenation, laser hair and tattoo removal, micro-blading, and... well, for the full list, just visit their website. It's pretty long.

What about prerequisites? There almost aren't any.

Almost - to enroll in the Basic course, you need a high school diploma or some form of relevant work experience. This Basic course will also act as the prerequisite for the Advanced course, which teaches the coolest complex procedures like Cool Sculpting, pigmentation treatments, and laser gynecology.

What if you don't have time for all of that though - two whole courses? Can't we just get it all packed into one?

Of course, you can, but you should be warned, it's pretty intense.

You can skip the Basic stuff and enroll directly in the Master's level training program to get all your certifications from a single course - because it includes everything covered in the Basic and Advanced programs. The program also doesn't have any official prerequisites, but the Dermysk team reserves the right to limit participation in the Master level course to only certain select, dedicated students, because like I said, it's pretty intense.

However, it's the only way you can get their coveted and rare "Master of Medical Aesthetics" certification - and that's a nice thing to hang on the wall when you're running your own clinic.

But hey, the point is that you've got options - lots of them, and not every career training option is packed with red flags and hidden costs.
