Carbide Dies For Automotive Industry

by Sagar Chauhan Digital Marketing Analyst
Carbide dies are used for both cold and hot forging methods. These dies are widely used in automotive industry for diverse applications. The dies are available in different shapes such as pointing, trap extrusion, hexagonal, flat extrusion, hex extrusion, plain hole, and others. The carbide dies are specially used for full thread, half thread bolts/screws. Different types of a carbide die for the automotive industry are available in the market. Also, the outer casing and inner casing of the dies are made using different materials. The outer is made from Hot Die Steel (HDS) of different grades and tungsten carbide for insert casing. You should have a complete knowledge of the particular dies which are essential for automobile industry if you are in the particular domain. Scroll down to read more about carbide dies.

Types Of Carbide Dies
There are different types of carbide dies available in the market. There are carbide drawing dies (draw dies), cold forming die (cold heading dies), carbide shaving dies, and extrusion dies. There is automotive-specific grade dies that are specially meant for the automobile industry. Dies made from tungsten carbide are acknowledged for their toughness and high resistance to abrasion, compression, corrosion, deflection, erosion, torsional stress, wear, etc. The tungsten carbide cold forming dies cold forming, or cold heading is made using a cold metal slug. These dies are widely used for the production of screws, bolts and various other fasteners. There is draw dies as well that are used for shaping the wire, bar, rod, and tube, which is widely used in the automobile industry. The tungsten carbide is known for its high compressive strength and thus it allows handling even the extreme pressures. Owing to this very reason, carbide dies are used in the drawing process by most of the manufacturers. The extrusion dies, on the other hand, are widely used for the manufacturing of tubing or pipes used in the automotive industry. It is advisable to select those dies that offer extended die life, reduced downtime, increased productivity, and others.

Application in Auto Industry
The carbide dies are widely used for the production of different components of the automobile industry. The processes in which these dies are used are cold and hot forging. These dies are manufactured to close tolerances in accordance with the customer drawings to enhance their operational life. These dies can be easily obtained in the diverse specification that depends entirely on the user’s requirement and application. Carbide dies has an excellent ability to ensure the tolerance level required for the production of the diverse parts used in the automotive industry. Tungsten carbide has excellent metallurgical and financial advantages that make it a better alternative to tool steels. The forging techniques in which these dies are used are meant for the formation and shaping of the metals.

The selection of particular forging methods and their dies is based entirely on manufacturer’s preference. It is according to the type of application on which the use of a particular die is dependent, especially in the automotive industry. It is advisable to select the carbide dies after a thorough inspection.
