Lord Shiva - In The Company Of Nandi |
The solitary Lord Shiva is seated atop the peak of
Kailash, his cosmic home next to the Mansarovar. The existential destroyer has
his trusty Nandi for company, the mythic bull with the power of a thousand of
its mortal counterparts. He rests one hand on its head between the horns, while
in the other he holds an ivory conch that he regards with half-shut eyes.
In the Lord Shiva Oil Paintings-Company of Nandi the beauteous eyes of Lord Shiva
are steeped in contemplation over the conch. In the midst of his albatross brow
is a semblance of the third eye smeared with vermillion. Circular gold kundalas
set off the pronounced jawline of the handsome Mahadeva. Luxuriant auburn hair
spread about his shoulders, from the crevices of which a serpent raises its
hood against the glamour of his halo.
The serpents coiled around his wrists and arms and waist go well with the ruggedness of the backdrop. A range of snow-clad mountains and hints of verdure. The Lord is resting on a sheet of ice, over which he has spread out his mat fashioned from the skin of a tiger he had overpowered. Note how his legs are gathered in a seeming bhadrasana, despite the relaxed stance of the rest of him.
