Canary Island’s Pyramids of Güímar

If you have ever considered visiting the Canary Islands your immediate thought may be aqua blue waters, light brown sands and beautiful green mountains in the background coupled with the never ending sun.  While Tenerife is exactly that picturesque description and a common holiday destination, one thing that most people are unaware of are the hidden secrets found on the island. Did you know that Tenerife is home to its own pyramids? Tenerife is home to the pyramids of Güímar. The pyramids of Güímar are six rectangular pyramid shapes, terraces that are built from lava stone without the use of mortar. The pyramids are located in the district of Chacona, which is part of the town of Güímar on the island of Tenerife in the Canary Islands. Spain. The pyramids have been dated back to the 19th century CE and are said to possibly the byproduct of contemporary agricultural techniques. Other pyramids have been found that employ the same methods and use the same materials of construction at various sites in Tenerife, however, Güímar was home to nine pyramids but only six survived.
 
Francisco Padrón wrote about the pyramids of Güímar in The Tenerife newspaper “Diario de Avisos”. In the article he detailed the pyramids of the Canaries. It was as a result of this piece that he wrote that Thor Heyerdahl, an adventure and publisher became aware of the pyramids of the Canaries and this was in 1990. Thor Heyerdahl was so intrigued by the pyramids of Güímar that he relocated to Tenerife. Once in Tenerife he carried out his research on his hypothesis on the transatlantic link between Egypt and Central America in respect of pyramids.
 
Between 1991 and 1998 multiple excavations began on the site. In 1996 the results of the dating of the pyramids were presented and later published in 1998. A discovery was made under one of the broader edges of a pyramid; there was a natural lava cave and there were findings of the people called the Guanches from between 600 and 1000 AD.
 
The Guanches are a mystery as it was never established how these white skinned and fair haired people came to be living on islands so close to North Africa. Legend says that the Guanches had originally being Atlanteans who have survived when Atlantis went under the ocean as they were on the mountain peaks which today are known as the Canary Islands.
