Yes, you can. But there are a few things you will need to
keep in mind.
The best thing about ceramic tiles is that, they can be
installed on almost any surface. But the condition is the surface should be
clean and perfectly flat. There should be no holes or cracks the existing
ceramic flooring. If there are, they should be filled properly before tile
installation.
In addition, the base (subfloor or the old ceramic flooring)
and the new ceramic tile flooring should be in the perfect condition to provide
a solid adhesion. There are many other things that need to be taken into
consideration. For example:
- The tiles on the old ceramic flooring should be firmly
attached on the base (or their subfloor). If they are loose, you will need to
fix them before new floor installation.
- The old ceramic tile flooring will require scarring. This
will help strengthen the bonding of thin set or tile adhesive.
- Make sure that your subfloor and home’s structure is strong
enough to take the load of a double-layer ceramic tile flooring. If the joists
and substrate are old and corroded, they must be replaced prior to installing
new floor tiles. The subfloor or floor based that worked well for a single
layer of ceramic tile flooring might not be the suitable for double layers of
ceramic tiles.
- Such floors are too heavy and they might not provide you a
solid, stable and durable flooring.
- The height of your new flooring will be increased, if you tile
on an existing floor surface. This might require you to adjust the height of
your doors and other fixtures.
There you have it. If you have tested that your subfloor,
joists, and existing ceramic flooring can withhold some additional pressure, go
for it. But if you house is an old structure, it would be better to remove the
old flooring, prepare a new subfloor, and build a new ceramic tile flooring.
