What is nephrotic syndrome?

Nephrotic syndrome is a kidney disorder or a bunch of symptoms that signify the unusual functioning of your kidneys. These symptoms identify the leakage of excess protein in your urine. It is not a disease while it is a disorder that produces disarrangement in the systematic behaviour of your kidneys.

Tiny knots of blood vessels which are responsible for the filtration of waste products and excess fluids in your blood plays a prime role in the functioning of kidneys. The waste products and fluids that are not essential for your body passes into your bladder. Kidneys eliminate them in the form of urine. These filtering parts of kidneys are known as glomeruli; if anything happens to glomeruli, too much protein can be spotted in your urine. The fist-sized organs consist of million filtering units which are known as nephrons. They contain filters called the glomerulus and a tubule. The glomerulus handles the filtration of your blood and the tubule absorbs the essential substances and returns them into your bloodstream. Inflammation of the glomeruli can also be a reason for nephrotic syndrome. It is a major reason that has been affecting both adults and children. Multiple medical conditions that are evil for your body can happen if you are suffering from nephrotic syndrome.

What are the signs and symptoms of nephrotic syndrome?

The factor that can bring a sense of fear in people is that you cannot detect nephrotic syndrome without a routine blood or urine test. So routine check-ups are necessary in order to maintain the health state of your body. The test results may help you in giving details about the levels of protein in your urine. Some symptoms that occur when the condition has advanced to its extreme level are as follows:

  • Establishment of elevated levels of protein in the urine, this medical condition is known as proteinuria.
  • High levels of fat and cholesterol in your blood are harmful to your body. The medical term for it is hyperlipidemia.
  • Edema is swelling of your legs, feet, ankles, hands and face.
  • Low levels of the blood protein albumin in your blood are known as hypoalbuminemia. Blood protein albumin plays a major role in the growth of your body. Nephrotic syndrome can cause a lack of protein in your body which can weaken kidneys along with other internal organs.

What are the causes of nephrotic syndrome?

Kidneys are the balance which our body requires in the management of internal functions. They play a central role in your body as they handle multiple duties at the same time. The process of filtration of waste products; balancing electrolytes; forming red blood cells in your body and managing your blood pressure.

Symptoms of nephrotic syndrome can lead kidneys to lose their functionality gradually. Many disorders can also be the reasons for the diagnosis of nephrotic syndrome. These diseases also affect the rate of functioning of kidneys and other organs in your body. Diseases that can trigger nephrotic syndrome are as follows:

  • Focal segmental glomerulosclerosis: This is a primary cause of nephrotic syndrome as it affects the filtering parts of your kidney (glomeruli). it causes damage to such an extent that kidneys start to function abruptly. It is the most common cause of nephrotic syndrome in people nowadays.
  • Membranous nephropathy: This causes deposits of protein to build up in the glomerular basement membrane.
  • Minimal change disease: It is also called nil disease. Defined as the main cause of nephrotic syndrome in children.

However, there are secondary causes of nephrotic syndrome. They include:

  • Diabetes: one of the leading reasons for the destruction of the internal function of the kidney.
  • Lupus
  • Amyloidosis
  • Infections including HIV/AIDS, hepatitis b and hepatitis c.
  • Some allergic reactions.
  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
  • A genetic disorder that affects kidneys.

What are the complications of nephrotic syndrome?

If nephrotic syndrome is not discovered earlier then it can create a string of complications for the patients without treatment. Complications include:

  • Blood clots: Due to poor filtration of blood, a lack of protein that prevents the formation of blood clots can occur. this triggers the risk of developing clots in your veins.
  • High blood pressure and elevated blood triglycerides: Increase in the levels of cholesterol and triglycerides can create a strike of complications internally. High blood pressure is one of the disastrous outcomes of nephrotic syndrome.
  • Kidney failure: The loss of kidney function due to the build-ups of waste products in your blood.
  • Infections such as pneumonia, meningitis because your body loses immunoglobulin that fights foreign infections.
