PROSTAID Calgary is a non-profit support group that's been dedicated to prostate cancer warriors and their loved ones for over 30 years. These folks know exactly what you're going through because they've been there themselves. Now they want to take you by the hand and walk this road with you.

The company offers education, advocacy, and, most importantly, a space to connect with others facing prostate cancer. By sharing stories, treatment experiences, coping strategies, and more, together you'll find the strength and will to keep fighting.

All of PROSTAID Calgary's services are free for patients and their families. There's no need to battle prostate cancer alone when this amazing community has your back.

What to Expect at PROSTAID Calgary's Monthly Meetings

PROSTAID Calgary holds general meetings on the third Wednesday of each month at the CKE Community Centre in Calgary. The meetings begin at 7:30 p.m. and feature:

  • A guest speaker, usually a doctor, discussing new developments in prostate cancer research, testing, and treatment. You'll get the inside scoop on discoveries and therapies.
  • Open Q&A to ask that burning question you've been dying to get answered. The meetings offer access to medical experts.
  • Small group discussion where you break into informal groups to chat about your own experiences. Meet others going through the same thing who truly understand the physical and emotional impact. Find your people.
  • Completely free attendance with no registration required. Just show up, ready to connect and learn.

You can also attend the meetings virtually over Zoom if you can't join in person.

February Meeting: New Tai Chi Developments with Dr. Lin Yang

PROSTAID Calgary's next general meeting is coming up on February 21st, 2024. The featured speaker will be epidemiologist Dr. Lin Yang, who will discuss exciting new Tai Chi options for treating prostate cancer.

Dr. Yang will present fascinating new research on how practices like Tai Chi can benefit prostate cancer patients. Her studies examine the powerful impact obesity, physical activity, and mind-body exercises can have on cancer outcomes.

If you're weighing your treatment options, this is one presentation you won't want to miss. Dr. Yang will delve into how these newer, more holistic forms of intervention can help with survivorship.

Peer Support to Help Manage Emotions and Times of Loneliness

In addition to the general meetings, PROSTAID Calgary provides more intimate peer support groups based on your specific situation:

The Warriors Group is for patients with advanced prostate cancer. This group focuses on topics like navigating treatment, clinical trials, and disease management. Connect with fellow survivors who understand the physical and emotional impacts first-hand.

The Wives, Partners, and Caregivers Group is for those supporting a loved one through prostate cancer. Come share your experiences and find solidarity with other caregivers. Gain insight into how you can provide the best support while taking care of your own needs.

These peer groups allow for honest, open discussion in a more informal setting. You'll form powerful bonds with others facing the same challenges.

"PROSTAID Calgary is here to assist and support patients, families, and friends by informing, empathizing, and reassuring men on their journey with prostate cancer," said Brad Sterling, President of PROSTAID Calgary. "By sharing our experiences, we can lift each other's spirits and strengthen our resolve to fight for quality of life and a cure."
