Breathalyzer App: Is It Worth It?

by Fusion 360 Studios Digital Marketing Specialists

Party-goers and socialites alike rejoiced at the thought of an app and small device that can quickly and effectively show the blood alcohol concentration in one’s breath. Advocates and critics both have solid points to consider when using these products and whether or not the devices help reduce the amount of drunk driving victims and accidents in general.

Advocates

Advocates and marketers in Utah and elsewhere see the breathalyzer app and device as an ingenious way to keep partiers and social drinkers alike in the know during their time outside the home. Their blood alcohol content is read when the breathalyzer is used in connection with their smartphone. Advocates say the amount of drunk driving victims and accidents are sure to go down in Utah and across the country with such an affordable and easy-to-use product.

Critics

Although advocates and marketers of the smartphone breathalyzer tout the potential benefits of the app and device, critics see it as something that will promote “buzzed” or impaired driving. If the device tells the user that they are near the legal limit or slightly under, no amount of coaxing from a smartphone app will dissuade people from getting in their cars and driving home. If anything, people are looking for a reason to drive; all of that given to them via a smartphone app that tells them “you won’t get arrested at this level.”

While some may air on the side of caution when using a breathalyzer app, others may trust in the ratings completely and drive on home; leaving motorists at risk of becoming drunk driving victims. The Today news network even tested three of the more commonly used devices on three guests at a party. The results were shocking: one of the devices registered far below the actual alcohol content while the other two were closer, but still a ways away from a correct reading.
