According to the latest reports, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is looking to
initiate a special drive to remove concrete structures around the tree bases,

are looking to remove banners, nails and cables hanging from the trees during
the drive.
Based on accounts, officials from the BMC's Garden
Department have mentioned that the drive will be undertaken through the
"Vruksh Sanjeevni Muhim" initiative from April 18 to 23. In addition,
civic body staff, many NGOs and educational institutions will also be partaking
in the scheme.
It has been reported that the National Green Tribunal's
(NGT) directions will be adhered to while conducting the initiative. Jeetendra
Pardeshi, BMC superintendent of gardens was quoted in narratives elaborating on
how the NGT had given directions to ensure there are enough spaces near the
trees.
In light of this, the concrete structure around the trees
will be removed. He stated that many a time trees are used as advertising means
as well as utility cables are hung from them.
The civic body hopes to cover the maximum number of trees
during this initiative. Moreover, recently, Mumbai was
recognized as the “2021 Tree City of
the World” by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United
Nations (UN) together with the Arbor Day Foundation.
