Blood Donation- Why Is It Necessary?

by Medicosa Healthcare Online Marketing Consultants

According to a report published in World Health Organization, about 108 million blood donations are collected globally. More than half of these come from high income countries, home to 18% of the world’s population. This statistics reveals that due to a lack of information about the process of blood donation, sparsely populated or poor countries remain deprived of the deed of blood donation.

One thing which every nation needs to understand is there are never enough blood donors. With increasing advancements in technological field, there are more numbers of facilities to keep the donated blood safe for a long time. Although there is a lot of misinformation prevailing, particularly, in poorer countries, many people who are ready to donate blood are not able to do it because they are unaware of the required procedure which they have to go through to donate blood. The onus in such situations is on the concerned authorities to educate people about blood donation procedures and raise awareness amongst the people to do the same.

Efforts are being made to do the same. Television ads featuring well known celebrities are being telecasted on TV as they are influential personalities who can inspire a change among the masses. Regular blood donation camps are being set up in the most deserted of places to facilitate blood donation among willing people.

The concerning thing in this situation is the lack of knowledge which prevails in the society. There are various misconceptions, like, blood donation can be fatal to life, it can cause damning log term effects to the body and the most common of all, a needle hurts.

Blood donation procedure is carried out by well trained professionals with a good knowledge of human body. Nobody can die while giving blood, in fact, if one takes long term effects into consideration; one can say that they are saving a life. Proper screening of the donor is done before hand to ensure that him/her is not infected with any disease, past medical records are checked and only then are they allowed to donate blood. .Youngsters in the age of 17-21 should be targeted particularly for blood donation as the human body during this age is at its best, both mentally and physically.

Nowadays, even some money can be earned by donating blood. Such donors are called paid donors. Although no motivation should be needed for doing such a noble deed, still the authorities are coming up with such ideas to further increase the number of people donating blood. There are three types of donors in total-Voluntary unpaid, paid and family donors. The one statistics which gives hope to the world is that the data reported by the WHO shows that 73 countries collect more than 90% of the blood from voluntary unpaid donors.

Blood transfusion saves lives and health, but many patients do not have timely access to safe blood. Providing its citizens with safe and adequate blood should be on the top of the priority list of any country’s health care policy and infrastructure.
