Bike Maintenance for all Seasons
by Pooja Late so cutAs the weather starts to get warmer or slightly
better, motorcyclists are itching to get their bike out and enjoy themselves.
In the light of the seasons, I decided to come up with some tune up tips for
your bike before you begin riding. Before going through this article, it is
important you go through your owner’s manual for tips, specifications, and
other things. However, this article will get you started. If you don’t maintain
your bike before driving it, inevitably you may get an accident.
Tires and Wheels
First, ensure your tire has
the right pressure required. If your bike has been parked for a while, it may
have loss air in the process. Pump the tire according to the specification of
your bike, which is why I advise you to go through your owner’s manual. Every
bike has their own specification.
In addition, lookout for wear and tears on the treads, bulges, or cracks. Look
at the rims for roundness, dents, and cracks. Replace parts that needs
replacement.
Controls
This part is also important aspect of your bike maintenance. Look at the levers to
ensure it is adjusted, lubricated, and fitted properly. There shouldn’t be any
crack, bent or broken part. Look at the cables to ascertain they are not
kinked, frayed or folding into sharp angles. Make sure your bile cables are not
interfering with your steering. Check hoses for leaks, cracks, cuts,
deterioration or chafing. Make sure the throttle is moving freely.
Lights
The light may not be
necessary during the day but it is important to check them, as you may not know
what may keep you late. If during winter you removed the battery, when fixing
back, ensure the terminals are tight and clean. It should be charged and
secured. Also, check the vent tube to verify it is not plugged or kinked. Test
the brake lights and tail lamp that it is working, as it ought to work.
Oil and other fluids
Check the levels and quality of the engine oil, hypoid
gear oil, shaft drive, hydraulic fluid, coolant and fuel. Replace or top-up
fluids that need it. Check for leaks of these same fluids.
Chassis
Evaluate the condition of your frame, look for dents,
cracks or lifting paints. Ensure the rear shocks and front forks are adjusted
properly. Check the tension of the chain or belt. If necessary, lubricate the
chain while inspecting the teeth. Replace any missing or broken fasteners and
if loosened tighten it.
Stands
For both side and center stands, ensure it is not bend
or cracked with the springs in its perfect place. Beside this, also ensure that
it has the needed tension to keep the bike in position. Secure your backrest
for you and your passenger properly to avoid any accident.
