Bharti Airtel prepares to compete with Reliance Jio’s 4G Thunder

Bharti Airtel’s commercial launch of 4G services may be a tactical move to pre-empt the expected entry of Reliance Jio last this year, but investors clearly weren’t impressed. The firm’s shares have fallen by about 1% since the announcement.

But even though investors may not see the move as a game-changer, the early-mover advantage can be expected to help the firm in the upcoming battle with Reliance Jio.

airtel logo new1 Bharti Airtel prepares to compete with Reliance Jios 4G ThunderBharti is expected to have 35,000 base transceiver stations (BTS) by the end of the year for its 4G operations, while Reliance Jio is expected to have 75,000 BTS at the time of launch. But, according to an analyst with an institutional brokerage, Bharti appears to have chosen an early launch to try and steal the thunder from Reliance Jio’s launch, expected later in the year.

Some of the features in Bharti’s 4G subscriber packs are similar to what has been expected from Reliance Jio. For instance, some of the higher value packs include unlimited voice, free downloads of music and other digital content.
