Best Type of packing tape when moving?
by Pathlie Lee Business consultantGetting ready to move seems to be a simple
matter of throwing everything into boxes and getting it on moving van. Moving
companies can charge a lot for packing, which includes – but is not limited to
– time and labor, boxes, bubble wrap, foam, and packing tape.
You can save a nice chunk of change by doing your own packing and clearly labeling the boxes with the rooms where they need to be unloaded. Naturally, you should use sturdy double or triple wall boxes, whatever void fill and padding need to secure your possessions, but when it comes to picking a packing tape things can get a little complicated.
Right Tape, Wrong Tape
There are a number of external factors that dictate what tape will function best in which circumstances. Temperature, humidity, adhesive, width, and grade. The higher the grade of the tape, the stickier and stronger it is. Consider what is going into the box before taking a grade of tape. You may even want to use several different types according to what’s in the box and where the box is going – for instance you would use a different grade of tape for boxes being stored in a shed, garage, or storage space then you would for boxes that would be unpacked immediately or shortly after arrival.
● Standard shipping tape: This kind of tape is designed to take a lot of handling and is generally used by companies that ship a lot of packages. It is usually a hot melt adhesive and comes in widths of 2 to 3 inches. It is typically dispensed with the tape gun and applied directly to boxes.
● Moving and storage tape: This tape is generally an acrylic adhesive, thicker and heavier than standard shipping tape. It is made to handle high and low temperatures, as well as remaining sticky in high humidity. This type of tape also requires a tape gun or dispenser.
● Reinforced tapes: For very heavy objects a thick, fiber-embedded tape is the way to go. This tape is even thicker than moving and storage tape, and has fiberglass, hemp, or other fibers embedded for extra strength. It can be tricky to handle but a tape gun is not required - though it may be convenient.
