The weather in Gurez Valley is cold throughout the year. Even in summer, the temperature goes as low as 5 degrees Celsius and as high as 20 degrees Celsius. 


Snowfall starts in November and the snow starts melting in April. If you want to visit the valley in winter, you cannot travel by road as the Razdan pass remains blocked in winter. You will have to travel by air, taking a helicopter from Srinagar or Bandipora.



Month-wise weather of Gurez Valley


1. January to February


Temperature ranges between 2-3 degrees to -10 degrees celsius. Snowfall is heavy and Razdan pass is closed. A helicopter is the only way to visit here. 


2. March


The temperature rises to 5 degrees to -5 degrees at night. Day temperature rises to even 8 degrees on some days. The snow starts to melt, though the Razdan pass is still inaccessible. 


3. April to June


The snow has completely melted. The Razdan pass is declared open. Day temperature rises to 20 degrees celsius though night temperatures hover at around 5 degrees. Sunlight is abundant and tilts towards scorching. Sunscreen is a must-carry if you are visiting in these months. 


4. July to August


These are monsoon months in the Gurez valley. The temperature rises up to even 30 degrees during the day and drops down after the rain and at night. The roads are difficult to access due to heavy rainfall. You can expect rainfall every second day in these months. The valley becomes lush green and beautiful. 


5. September


September announces the onset of cold winds in Gurez. The greenery is at its best, the monsoon has gone away and the temperature is dropping every day, starting from 25 degrees at the beginning of the month and dropping to around 15 degrees by the end of it. 


6. October


The valley sheds its leaves and the biodiversity is ready for its first snow. The temperature drops down to 0 degrees at night and around 12 degrees during the day. 


7. November to December


Valley receives its first snow and the Razdan pass is closed off. Air travel is the only way to reach the valley. The temperature drops down to threatening -5 degrees in these months and rarely rises above 0 degrees in the day even. The whole valley gets covered in snow by December end. 



Best time to visit Gurez Valley


The best time to visit Gurez valley is the months of April, May and September. The weather in winter is severe and in June, the sun is scorching. July and August are rainfall months, making it very hard for you to plan a day outside. October presents a chance of rainfall in high passes which may lead to road closure.


However, if you want to witness snow at its best in Gurez Valley, the winter months of January and February would be the best time for you to visit. The hotels remain open in the winter months as well due to increasing tourism in Gurez Valley.
