Best Time & Places to Visit in Mumbai - A Beginner's Guide

Formerly known as Bombay, Mumbai is now the cultural, industrial and financial capital of India. But no matter how modern this city has become, it has retained its natural and cultural heritage, and remains one of the most beautiful and interesting places to visit.

Like any other city, Mumbai is subject to seasonal and weather changes that can affect travelling conditions. Though the weather in Mumbai is generally pleasant throughout the year, the different seasons make certain tourist attractions even more special.

Here’s a simple travel guide to Mumbai’s seasonal destinations:

Winter Season


The winter months are considered the most favorable time to travel and explore Mumbai’s outdoor destinations because the weather is generally mild and cool. The average temperature during the season is around 25 to 30 degrees Celsius (68 to 86 degrees Fahrenheit.) You can time your visit to coincide with holiday celebrations during the winter months of November and December. These include Diwali, New Year, and Christmas, among others.

•    Gateway of India – one of the most famous historical landmarks of India
•    Mahalaxmi Dhobi Ghat – the largest outdoor laundry in the world
•    Dharavi – featured in the movie Slumdog Millionnaire, Dharavi is one of the largest slum areas in the world
•    Jehangir Art Gallery – Mumbai’s most prestigious art gallery
•    Mount Mary Church (best visited during the Christmas season) – formally known as the Basilica of Our Lady of Mount and is one of Mumbai’s famous landmarks
•    ISKCON Temple - one of the most impressive temples in Mumbai built in honor of Lord Krishna.

Summer Season

The Indian summers can get really hot, but the evenings are pleasant and soothing. And though going out under the sun may not be ideal, tourists can still make short trips to nearby outdoor getaways and take evening walks by the beaches. The weather and temperature in the summer season can reach as high as 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit) in the day, but moderates to around 32 degrees Celsius at night (90 degrees Fahrenheit).

Inclusive months: March - June

Best places to visit:


•    Haji Ali Dargah or Haji Ali’s Mosque – one of India’s famous mausoleums
•    Juhu Beach (sunset and evening) – famous for its breathtaking sunset views
•    Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus – an iconic landmark built during the British rule
•    Wankhede Stadium – this is the arena where the Mumbai Cricket Team plays their home games.

Monsoon Season

Expect lots of rainfall during the monsoon season, which is ideal for trips to hill stations and seaside destinations. The weather makes the scenery more breathtaking.

Inclusive months: July - October

Best places to visit:


•    Worli Sea Face – part of the breathtaking Bandra-Worli Sea Link
•    Bandra Fort – famous landmark on the Bandra-Worli Sea Link
•    Nehru Planetarium – popular science museum located in Worli
•    Shree Siddhivinayak Temple (best visited during the Ganesha Chaturthi Festival) – one of the most highly regarded temples in India it is dedicated to the Hindu god Ganesha
•    Mahalaxmi Temple or Mahalakshmi Temple (best visited during the Navratri and Dussehra Festival) – this temple dedicated to the Goddess Shakti’s three manifestations is one of India’s most respected temples
•    Kanheri Caves - the magnificent ancient monument carved from huge basaltic rocks.

Mumbai is constantly visited by tourists throughout the year, but you can get the best out of your tours if you plan and book your travel within the most ideal season when your target destinations are best visited. Nonetheless, Mumbai has a lot of destinations worth visiting, no matter when you decide to travel.
