by Maddy Smith Content Writer

Beautiful blooms have often served as the secondary star of popular films since vibrant blossoms can be such a visual feast. If only smell could be recorded on film as well!

Like us, you might be a little bit of a flowery aficionado; thus, it seems sensible that you would eventually start looking for amazing films about flowers. We assembled our own top ten list of must-watch floral movies.

To help you decide whether a film is right for you, we've selected our top picks below, along with a synopsis of each film's plot and a trailer, to give you an idea of what they are about and whether it is something you might go ahead and consider watching. Grab some popcorn, snuggle into your sofa and enjoy…

The Secret Garden - The beloved children's tale by Frances Hodgson Burnett has just been reimagined for the big screen, but the 1993 film adaptation starring Dame Maggie Smith as the vindictive housekeeper Mrs. Medlock has our hearts. The entire film is a tribute to the healing powers of friendship, nature, and hope; images depicting the namesake garden coming to life in the spring are enough to make even the toughest hearts weep.

Calendar Girls - This 2003 blockbuster is based on a true tale about best friends Annie (Julie Walters), and Chris (Helen Mirren), who pose nude for a "alternative calendar" to raise money for a hospital after Annie's husband dies of illness. After John planted them in the hope that he would survive to see them blossom, the sunflower thus became the group's symbol.

In a touching scene, Chris remarks, "I don't think there's anything on this world that trump life more than the sunflower," in a touching scene. These blooms will locate light no matter how dimly it may be. That is incredibly admirable and teaches us so much about life.

American Beauty - Even if you've never seen this 1999 Best Picture nominee, you're likely familiar with the scene depicted by Mena Suvari sprawled naked on a bed of crimson rose petals. The title references Suvari's character, Angela, and is titled after one of the most widely popular rose varietals in the United States. During a midlife slump, typical suburban man Lester (Kevin Spacey) develops feelings for Angela, his teenage daughter's closest friend. The rose has come to represent the illusion and meaninglessness of fleeting beauty.

Alice in Wonderland - Lewis Carroll's story's mystical chatting flowers in the illustrated 1951 rendition is suitably fantastical, particularly when all of them start singing a tune. Cartoon versions include tulips, pansies, irises, roses, sunflowers, sweetpeas, daffodils,  calla lilies, morning glory, lilacs, chrysanthemums, and daisies. However, only the roses in the 2010 live-action version have unsettling human features. Then, there is the Queen of Hearts, whose panicked gardeners attempt to cover the white roses they unintentionally planted with paint because she insists that only red roses be cultivated in her garden. Try our rainbow flowers for a similarly creative twist on roses!

Tulip Fever - An orphaned girl in 17th-century Holland is coerced into wedlock with a wealthy businessman. He hires a young aspiring painter to create her portrait, and the two start having an intense relationship. At the height of "tulip fever," when some few bulbs are sold for 10 times the yearly salary of an expert craftsman, the lovers enter the glamorous but perilous Dutch tulip market in a desperate attempt to achieve financial and romantic freedom. The impressive cast of this 2017 dud includes Judi Dench, Alicia Vikander, and Christoph Waltz. Despite being derided by some as being uninteresting and implausible, the flowers and historical attire seem lovely!

Big Fish - Big Fish's most famous scene is when Edward Bloom (Ewan McGregor) plants 10,000 daffodils outside the window of his crush to express his feelings for her. Best of all, all those gorgeous sunshine yellow creatures are real. This famous fantasy drama from 2003 follows Bloom's irate son as he struggles to distinguish fact from fiction in his colorful father's passing. People, get the tissues ready.

Beauty and the Beast - Everyone is familiar with and adores this beloved Disney classic from 1991 about a haughty prince who, after rudely declining a witch's offer of sanctuary in lieu of a red rose, gets transformed into a monstrous beast. She applies a curse on the rose, which is periodically seen in a secret wing of the castle, shining but wilting slowly. Before the last petal falls, the beast must experience meaningful, reciprocated love; otherwise, he will always be a monster. Can he quickly win over the stunning, spirited Belle? Look to our preserved eternal rose, which can survive up to a year, for a gift fit for a fairytale!

The Great Gatsby - It's no surprise that Baz Luhrmann's extravagant 2013 rendition of this F Scott Fitzgerald classic won Oscars for design because the flowers are genuinely gorgeous. Gatsby decorates a chamber with orchids in the most elaborate floral arrangement before his eagerly anticipated rendezvous with Daisy, his romantic interest. Constance Spry, the most well-known avant-garde florist in London in the 1930s, served as the inspiration for the extravagant display, which was created to win back his broken heart. Also amazing are Gatsby's gardens! Swoon…

Dare to be Wild - The biographical drama film Dare to be Wild is about the Irish botanist and horticulture Mary "Wild" Reynolds. It chronicles her journey from Ireland, where she lives, to California, where she becomes a prosperous botanist and plant breeder, where she eventually moves to study flowers in the wild.

Greenfingers - This drama is about a prisoner entering an audacious "open" facility where prisoners can move freely and receive job training before release. While there, he realizes he has a talent for growing flowers. A horticulture expert notices this and invites him and four other inmates to compete in a national flower arrangement competition. The movie is based on an actual event.
