Best Free Accounting and Bookkeeping Software for Small Businesses

by Miodrag Kostic Accountant, economist, latent politician and his o

Small businesses are faced with a unique challenge, while they often don’t have enough accounting and bookkeeping tasks to justify hiring a full time accountant, they still have to deal with this on monthly basis, which necessitates professional assistance. A lot of small business owners decide to outsource their bookkeeping precisely for this reason; however, there is an alternative. If you have some basic accounting knowledge (which is kind of expected from everyone who owns and runs a business) you can take care of most, if not all, accounting and bookkeeping tasks yourself with the help of suitable software. This is why we have compiled a list of some of the most useful bookkeeping apps, and just to help you save even more, they’re all free.

VT Cash Book

This is a pretty basic app, which won’t offer too much versatility, such as processing invoices, creating client or supplier databases or anything similar, but it will allow you to easily record your income and expenditures. This is to say if you are running a trading operation, and just need to record the basic transactions, you’ll be well covered with this app, and will be able to use it regardless of your level of expertise. The app is not completely devoid of any additional features, though, as it is also able to help you with VAT returns and has multiple accounts support.

NCH Express Invoice

Another basic app, which could complement VT Cash Book quite nicely. Basically, it lets you quickly create invoices or quotes in just a couple of easy steps, like entering the name of the customer and product specifics. The data can then be easily emailed, faxed or printed, as well as manipulated in other ways. It also allows you to create reports as well as keep track of outstanding invoices and payments. Even though it is technically free if you have less than five employees, you’ll have to confirm that that is the case every time you want to use the app, which might be annoying, but it is still well worth it.
TAS Basic

The “Basic” in the name of the app means that it is free, but it also means that this software comes with serious limitations to its range of features. However, it can still be more than useful enough to warrant a place in this list. Some of the limitations are the absence of any kind of support or the ability to create invoices and record sales, but it does allow you to create clear and precise reports, record the profit and expenditures, keep several bank accounts and create supplier and customer records.

Adminsoft Accounts

This app will offer you more functionality, but you will have to invest more time and effort to get to really know it. It is very feature rich, which such functions as payroll management, stock control, purchase order processing, invoicing, and managing accounts payable and receivable. There is a lot more to this app, including some specialized modules, so, considering that it is completely free, you should definitely give it a shot and see what it has to offer to you.
