Before Victoria's Secret Angel, Josephine Skriver was ... a rainbow baby
by TM Maria Be a king in your own kingdomThe LGBT + model and activist shares with Vogue the story of
her family, with a lesbian mother and a gay father. "Honestly, I hope many
more children like me are born," she says proudly.
We know Josephine Skriver (Denmark, 1993) for being one of
the winged beings in the cast of Victoria's Secret. Although he began to parade
in high fashion in 2011 - his first time on the catwalk was under the
protection of Calvin Klein -, his worldwide fame would come two years later
when signing a contract with the company of the angels. She had been discovered
in New York, with only 16 years old, when she visited the city to play a
tournament with her Danish women's soccer team. He now resides in the Big
Apple, where these days the NYC Pride Week celebration lives(which coincides
with the World Pride Madrid, this year the capital of the holiday) with a
feeling, more than special, capital. The reason? Her personal story: JoJo, as
her friends and fans know her, was, as she calls herself, a rainbow baby.
His mother, a lesbian, published an ad in a Danish newspaper
in search of a sperm donor. A young gay man answered that he also wanted to be
a father. Josephine was born from that union and, years later, his brother, Oliver,
who is now 16 years old.
About his childhood
as a rainbow baby
When I was little I didn't realize all the love I was
receiving. My families started to get bigger and I had cousins, stepbrothers
... Anyway, the family is not just blood, it's love, it's a hundred thousand
things. I feel very fortunate for the parents I have, but as a child I didn't
always see it that way, sometimes, I felt it didn't fit. Even so, I know many
people with more traditional family structures that their parents have divorced
and fought, they don't talk to each other ... My case was not at all traumatic.
No one is perfect, but my parents have always put their children at the center
of everything, they have taught us how wonderful this world is.
Regarding his social
media activism
The social networks help to expand the opinion and to raise
the voice towards the rest of the world, to try to change it, to do it better.
I hope my generation is different and contributes to good. My mother, for
example, when I was young I had to continually demonstrate and demonstrate,
remove prejudices. Now we are in the process of getting something wonderful,
something we can be proud of. I sincerely hope that many more children like me
are born.
The formula to go
from mean people
There are always bad people you meet, at school, in the
street ... but I don't let them be with me. I am very sharp. And I've been like
that since I was little. I have always been very proud of my parents, they have
never hidden anything from me and I am very lucky to have grown up in Denmark
because it is a very open-minded country. However, I am of the opinion that it
is important to give people a chance. I don't think you have to fight evil with
more evil, but with good things, being positive.
His attitude to life
I don't want people to treat me differently or behave strangely with me, just to accept and respect my family. I hope a day comes when everything changes. I have never felt hate for people who didn't understand it, nor have I hated anyone just because they hated me. I am surprised when someone does not listen to me because I know that they will change their perception of my story or understand it differently, so it is very important that they are informed and, above all, that they respect and listen.
