Bed Dressing techniques that can change an entire Room

by Kristen White Blogger
Most of us wake up in the morning, and hastily throw the cover back over our bed. This may be about as close to ‘made’ as many of our beds actually ever get. ‘Bed dressing’ isn’t a term that people are widely familiar with anymore- but it’s been making a huge comeback in the realm of interior design. If you’ve ever looked inside a popular homes magazine, then you’ve undoubtedly seen pictures of beautiful bedrooms that look completely organized. What many people fail to realize is that having a well-dressed bed is three quarters of the battle won. The bed is going to be the largest piece of furniture in a traditional bedroom. This makes it a major focal point, and an important center of decoration.

There are fantastic things that can be done to your bed for a fairly low price that can completely change the landscape of the space in question. Those staged pictures from popular magazines and websites aren’t as far out of reach as you may believe. Dressing a bed is all about the way that the sheets, pillows, covers and all other components are laid out- and it makes a huge difference. Throwing a blanket over your bed may make the space look a bit more put together, but it won’t add the polish that comes with that extra technique. There are actually several different ways to outfit the bed, and it all starts with the sheets.

Anyone who’s even slightly acquainted with fine sheets will understand that natural quality linen is miles above any other fabric. It’s incredibly soft and the feel actually improves with washing. Real bed linens are also extremely absorbent and can allow you to wake up feeling cool and dry regardless of the temperature. This is only part of what’s made linen bed sheets so popular. If you buy a white linen bedspread, it’s going to go with almost anything- and potentially last for decades. Real linen sheets may seem pricey, but they pay for themselves over the length of their  use. You’d have to buy up to ten sets of cheaper cotton sheets to meet the life expectancy of one set of high-quality linen ones.

Choose sheets that contrast to the bedspread in a way that’s aesthetically pleasing. As long as you have the correct pillows and accessories- you can make almost any color scheme work for you. A linen bedspread or duvet can make an eye catching top layer to your bed’s surface. The difference between a bedspread and a duvet is what will be underneath them. The duvet is generally heavier and filled with an insulating fabric. This means that it isn’t usually used along with a top sheet or other blankets. A bedspread it a bit thinner, and requires the additional cover of top sheets or exterior blankets.

Using a linen duvet will add that soft and inviting look to your bed’s dressing. Contrast this with angular pillows that can draw the eye to the top of the bed. Larger square pillows can be set up in the back, and smaller rectangular ones can be laid on top of these. Use slightly different colors for the pillows, and allow them to connect with the fitted sheets or the bed sham. The last traditional pillows are the small round or oblong decorative pillows up front. Using one or two of these decorative pillows will depend on the size of the bed, and where you want to draw the eye.

Using a throw to break up a solid colored duvet is a great way to create interest along the length of the bed. This entire process can be completed in just a matter of minutes every day, and can make you feel like you’re coming home to a magazine spread.
