CHRISTMAS party season is just around the corner – and if you can't go all out with your hairstyle at this time of year, when can you?

For an elegant updo with the wow-factor, we spoke to the owner of Selina Styles, Selina Di Piazza, who showed us how to create this classic 1940s style with a modern twist.

"A modern style with a vintage twist is always a popular choice for anyone who wants to make a statement with their hairstyle," said the 28-year-old, from Hanley.

"I chose a style that incorporates victory rolls as I always think they make a big impression and they're really versatile.

"Plus they look relatively complex, which gives the impression of someone who has gone to a lot of trouble and put some effort into their look."

Selina gave bartender and ceramics artist Alice Thatcher, 26, a vintage-inspired updo.

"First of all I split the hair in two parts, one larger part and one smaller," she said.

"With the larger side I backcombed the hair at the roots to create some lift and then I rolled the hair, bringing it to the front and pinning it in place."

With the smaller section of hair, Selina repeated the backcombing step and then rolled the hair up to meet the first roll. I then pinned this and moved on to French pleat the back of the hair.

"The beauty of this style is that you can dress it up as much as you want.

"If you don't feel comfortable with having all of your hair up, you could leave the rest down and put some big curls through it or you could plait it at the back."

The versatility of this classic style is what makes it such a popular one among ladies who want to go all out with their hairstyle.

Selina added: "I think the fact it's suitable for such a wide range of hair lengths and types makes it the go-to style for anyone out to impress.

"It's a popular choice for brides and bridal parties but more and more ladies are booking up to have this kind of style for a special event they're attending."

Alice, of Newcastle, said: "I absolutely love this style and the fact that it's a bit different would make it perfect for anyone wanting to go all out during the party season.

"I like the idea of leaving the hair down at the back too so I'll definitely be coming to Selina for this style again."
