If you are among those people struggling to lose weight and has tried everything from dieting, exercise to medicines then you must consult a doctor and know about the other weight loss strategies that can be successful. Bariatric surgery is performed on people who are substantially overweight. These operations are basically performed on the stomach or intestine. The stomach and intestines during the operation procedure are reduced in size in order to control the amount of food consumption. The surgeries are of different types and will help you reduce weight and make you healthy, fit, and active.

The different types of Bariatric surgery are:

1. Gastric Bypass: Here the doctors divide stomach into two different compartments which are unequal in size and can only hold small amount of food. After the surgery people usually eat very less because their stomach becomes full very quickly. Doctors also call this kind of a treatment as restrictive technique.

2. Gastric Sleeve: This surgery helps in reducing significant amount of weight and is also known as sleeve gastrectomy. The surgeons remove the maximum part of the stomach, leaving only 15% which is further shaped into sleeves like structure. Smaller stomach restricts the intake of calorie and thus the patient looses weight drastically.

3. Billopancreatic Diversion: Usually obesity is caused due to high intake of calorie. In this treatment method doctors create a new smaller stomach which absorbs lower amount of food inside the intestine.

4. Lap Band Surgery: In this kind of surgery food intake is restricted through a laparoscopic surgical method wherein a band is placed around the stomach to reduce its size. While performing the surgery doctors place a port under the skin of the abdomen which helps them adjust the size of the band. The adjustment of the band is done by passing a small amount of saline water through the port. This water is passed by injecting it inside. In the first few months of the surgery the band is usually adjusted several times by the doctor’s thus constant medical checkup might be required for the patients.

Lap band surgery has many benefits and some of them are:

1. The risk of nutritional deficiency is less when compared to the other bariatric surgeries.
2. There is no risk of hair loss nor do the patients suffer from dumping syndrome which can occur due to dietary restriction.
3. Adjustments can be done without any further surgery.
4. This is a long term solution for weight loss.
5. It is the least invasive surgical option where no intestinal re-routing is needed. Any kind of stapling or cutting is not performed by the doctors and thus the patients do not undergo severe pain or do they have lengthy hospital stay.
6. The recovery time is also less when compared to the other obesity surgery.
