What is Ulcerative colitis?

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a global disease which affects people of any age but is at the peak from 15 to 30 years and from 50 to 70 years. But it can come to any age group, male and female doesn't matter.

A chronic disease which is associated with the large intestine or colon. In this disease, the lining of the colon gets disrupted causing tiny sores that produce mucus and pus. Such a combination causes pain and the whole abdominal area gets upset, and the colon keeps getting empty quite frequently.

The immune system becomes weak and begins giving abnormal signals to the body. In normal conditions, cells & proteins that make a healthy immune system, it gets perplexed and begins doing unnatural things and starts killing the cells that do not harm the body. It begins taking food as a foreign substance which harms the body and begins destroying the nutrients which are carried by what we intake. When this happens the body sends the white blood cells to the intestine and they produce chronic inflammation and ulcerations.

Initially, this disease erupts in the colon area and with the passage of time, it gradually spreads to the whole intestine. Because ulcerative colitis is a chronic phenomenon, symptoms don't appear all of a sudden but take their own time to appear.

Symptoms of Ulcerative colitis:

The symptoms appear mildly to half the patients. Their variability depends on the intensity of the disease, how severe it is (the amount of colon and rectum, which are inflamed) and the speed of inflammation. Usually, it is found that people who suffer mildly can see symptoms more clearly than those who are hit with high intensity on the colon.

The main symptoms are:

  • Abdominal discomfort or Cramps
  • Rectal bleeding
  • Diarrhea

Other symptoms include

  • Anemia
  • Fatigue
  • Fever
  • Nausea
  • Weight loss
  • Loss of appetite
  • Abdominal sounds
  • Mouth ulcers
  • Loss of body fluids and nutrients
  • Skin lesions
  • Growth  retardation  in children

UC can also create trouble like joint pain, eye irritation, kidney stones, liver disease, and osteoporosis. These symptoms don't stay permanently and keep withering on their own but these do return and the gap between their next appearance can be tiny of some days or long enough like say months or many years, but the fact is that they do return. Once when you feel such symptoms at least for some time, just get your body tested in a lab by doing Colonoscopy test or CBC test. Never be late because later on, it keeps enhancing the complications. The sooner, the better.

Till date the reasons why ulcerative colitis happens, are unknown. There is not even a single case that suggests that this disease is infectious or contagious. Mostly it weakens the immune system and inviting many toxins that are lurking in our environment to strike. A strong immune system keeps all the toxins at bay because it is always ready to combat any foreign substances that enter our body and tries to harm the body on a daily basis. Although mental condition and certain foods do trigger the symptoms, actually they don't cause ulcerative colitis. Family history can be found guilty or Jewish ancestry can also be gauged.

Complications

Possible difficulties of ulcerative colitis are like

  • Severe bleeding
  • A hole in the colon (perforated colon)
  • Colon narrowing
  • Severe dehydration
  • Inflammation of the joints (arthritis)
  • Ankylosing spondylitis
  • Liver disease (it is rare)
  • Kidney stones
  • Osteoporosis
  • Inflammation of skin
  • Sores (lesions) in the eye
  • An increased risk of colon cancer
  • A rapidly swelling of the colon (toxic mega-colon)

One needs to heal and you can't live happily after any of the above-mentioned symptoms appear.
