Ayurvedic Management of Liver Spots

Liver spots, also known as Age spots or Solar Lentiginosis are flat brown, gray, or black spots on the skin. They vary in size and most commonly appear in areas exposed to the sun, such as the face, hands, shoulders, and arms. They can look like cancerous growths, but they are harmless.

Usually, Liver spots are self-diagnosable. The best way to avoid Liver spots is to avoid sun exposure and wear sunscreen.

Causes of Liver spots

Age spots are caused due to the excess production of melanin that is skin pigment. The exact cause of the same is unknown or it is idiopathic. The possible causes can be attributed to skin aging, sun exposure, or other forms of UV light exposure. UV light speeds up the production of melanin, accumulation of melanin causes Age spots or Liver spots.

Symptoms of Liver Spots

Appearance

These spots mostly develop spots on the areas of the skin that receive the most sun exposure, which includes:

  1. Face
  2. The back of hands
  3. Shoulders
  4. Upper back
  5. Forearms

Risk Factors

People of any age group, sex, or race can develop age spots.

However, age spots are more commonly seen in people with certain risk factors. These include:

  1. Older than 40 years of age
  2. Fair-skinned people
  3. History of frequent sun exposure
  4. History of frequent use of tanning bed

Symptoms of Liver Spots

Age spots range from light brown to black in color and these have the same texture as the rest of the skin, and mostly appear on sun-exposed areas. They don’t cause any pain. Further to differentiate, age spots are,

  1. They’re flat and oval areas of increased melanin pigmentation.
  2. The spot color varies usually from tan to dark brown.
  3. It occurs on skin that has had the most sun exposure over the years, such as the backs of hands, tops of feet, face, shoulders and upper back.
  4. They can club together which makes them more noticeable.

Liver Spots in Ayurveda

As the age advances the doshic physiology of the human body changes and as per Ayurveda as we get older there is an increase in the predominance of Vata dosha and all the causative factors which attribute to it imbalances the dosha and as there are metabolic changes and due to the overload on the liver from toxins as it cannot get rid of the toxins and this result on age spots.
