Avoid the Top 5 international Sim Card Mistakes

by IV S. Consultant

If you are planning a trip to the United States and are wondering about your communication expenses and what kind of network to opt for, you should get yourself an international sim card at the earliest. Getting a USA sim card has a whole lot of advantages, primary among them is keeping in touch with your people back home without having to burn a huge hole in your wallet. Here are five international sim card mistakes you need to avoid while travelling to the United States:

1. Assuming you can use the international roaming provided by your regular service provider

This is a big mistake, and one commonly made. Don’t assume that you can just pay roaming charges on your regular service provider, and continue to use the same SIM. You will be surprised to see the huge bill you are bound to get when you get back home. Always opt for an international sim card, and specifically a USA sim card, if you are heading to the United States.

2. Deciding to get a sim card once you reach your destination

If you wait till you reach the United States to get a sim card, you will have trouble keeping your family or friends informed. You will have to land there and then go about looking for a USA sim card, spending your time and energy on locating the right one, rather than holidaying or networking, or whatever has taken you to the US. Meanwhile, your people back home will have to spend many anxious moments waiting for your message that you have landed and have settled in.

3. Not doing your research in advance

Before leaving for your destination, you should research which is the best international sim card for your needs. You should check out the data and voice plans, and order one from the comfort of your home before you travel. This saves you a lot of hassles later on.

4. Relying too much on WiFi

So, you may think most cafes, lodges, hotels or restaurants will have free WiFi, especially abroad, and why would you need a SIM with data. However, public and free WiFi can sometimes be insecure and slow. You would need an international sim card with enough data and voice for you to stay connected, irrespective of whether you are on a holiday or for business.

5. Not switching off Internet data

Most smartphones today automatically use data for updates on various apps. This data that is quietly being used means all your international sim card data gets over without your knowledge. The trick is to turn off notifications and  mobile data or leave them on only for the apps that you specifically need for that point in time. This saves you a lot of data and you can use your sim card for a longer time.
