Australian Made Wool Quilt or Goose Down Duvet?

by Halcyon Dreams Australian Wool Quilts Online

Whenever we hear the word ‘duvet’ we think of a soft, lightweight quilt filled with feathers from ducks or geese or perhaps the cheaper alternative, a polyester filled quilt.

This type of bedding is one of the most popular choices for easy bedmaking but the traditional Australian made wool quilt or doona is increasing in popularity due to its natural properties. So which is better? A pure wool quilt or a goose down duvet? Let’s take a look.

There are so many different types of quilt and duvet on the market; it can be very difficult to make an informed decision. While budget can determine your final purchase, after all, those soft goose down filled duvets are expensive, there are also other factors to take into consideration, including the climate you live in and your own personal preference.

The Wool Quilt or Doona

Traditional Australian wool quilts are usually filled with wool from Australian sheep. A totally natural fibre, wool has both insulating and moisture-wicking properties that ensure that you’ll stay warm but dry as you sleep. Wool is also known for its hypoallergenic properties, which makes this kind of quilt a good choice for anyone with allergies.

However, to achieve the same level of warmth as a down duvet requires a greater amount of wool, which in turn makes wool quilts much heavier than down versions. If you prefer the feeling of a heavy blanket around you as you sleep, a wool quilt could be the perfect choice. However, if you prefer lighter bedding, it may prove a little too heavy.

The Lowdown on Goose Down Duvets

If you’re wondering exactly what goose down is – it’s the layer of ultra-fine feathers that sits under the larger exterior feathers. It’s this layer that provides the insulation and waterproofing the geese need against the elements. The down helps to trap in warmth, prevent them from losing too much moisture but also keeps them protected from external moisture.

So, as you can imagine, a goose down duvet is the perfect choice if you want to keep snug and warm while you’re asleep. However, if you buy a down quilt made of inferior down, you may have issues with moisture absorption, which means that you may become overheated or feel sweaty while you’re in bed.

That’s why it’s important to buy the best quality down quilt you can afford which contains down with extremely fine fibres to wick away the moisture generated by your body when you’re asleep. Unfortunately, these premium quality quilts can come with a hefty price tag!

The Verdict

If you prefer a lightweight quilt that’s extremely warm or you need bedding that’s going to keep you toasty no matter how cold it may be outside of the bed, a down quilt may be the best choice.

However, if your budget doesn’t stretch to goose down, you don’t mind the feeling of a heavy comforter and you want a filling that’s entirely natural, picking up a premium quality doona in a wool quilt sale is a sensible option.
