Australia PR Points Calculator: Criteria for Skilled Workers Seeking Permanent Residence

by Visa Consultant Immigration Expert

The Skilled Independent Visa (Subclass 189) and Skilled Nominated Visa (Subclass 190) are the most common pathways for pursuing skilled work in Australia as a permanent resident. Both of these are points-tested visas i.e. each candidate is allocated points based on the selection factors of the Australia PR points calculator, and the highest-scoring among them are invited to apply for permanent residence.

The point allocation criteria can vary for each visa stream. In order to submit an Expression of Interest for these visas, candidates must score at least 65 points based on relevant criteria. It is not mandatory to score points under each factor. The criteria for the Subclass 190 and 189 visa are nearly identical:

Age (maximum 30 points)

Those between the ages of 25 and 32 years can claim the maximum points.

English Language Proficiency (maximum 20 points)

The candidate has to demonstrate competent, proficient or superior English language skills through the test results of an approved language examination.

Work Experience (maximum 20 points)

This includes skilled employment experience gained within and/or outside Australia.

Academic Qualifications (maximum 20 points)

Points are awarded for the highest academic qualification achieved by the candidate.
