Australia PR Points Calculator: Criteria for Skilled Workers Seeking Permanent Residence

Independent Visa (Subclass 189) and Skilled Nominated Visa (Subclass 190) are
the most common pathways for pursuing skilled work in Australia as a permanent
resident. Both of these are points-tested visas i.e. each candidate is
allocated points based on the selection factors of the Australia PR points calculator, and the
highest-scoring among them are invited to apply for permanent residence.
The point
allocation criteria can vary for each visa stream. In order to submit an
Expression of Interest for these visas, candidates must score at least 65
points based on relevant criteria. It is not mandatory to score points under
each factor. The criteria for the Subclass 190 and 189 visa are nearly identical:
Age (maximum 30 points)
Those
between the ages of 25 and 32 years can claim the maximum points.
English Language Proficiency (maximum 20
points)
The
candidate has to demonstrate competent, proficient or superior English language
skills through the test results of an approved language examination.
Work Experience (maximum 20 points)
This
includes skilled employment experience gained within and/or outside Australia.
Academic Qualifications (maximum 20 points)
Points are
awarded for the highest academic qualification achieved by the candidate.
Specialist Education Qualification (maximum 10
points)
Holding a
PhD or Master’s degree by research completed from an educational institution in
Australia over two or more academic years in specific STEM or ICT fields.
Australian Study Requirement (maximum 5 points)
Completing
a trade qualification, degree or diploma from an academic institution in
Australia that meets the Australian Study Requirement.
Professional Year in Australia (maximum 5
points)
Completing
a professional year in Australia provided by an approved organization in
engineering, ICT, computing or accounting over 12 months, in the nominated or
closely-related occupation, within the four years before being invited to apply
for the visa.
Community Language Credential (maximum 5
points)
Holding a
recognized credential in a community language i.e. an accreditation at a
paraprofessional or higher level, a certification at the professional or higher
level, or a credential for translating and interpreting the language.
Study in Regional Australia (maximum 5 points)
Completing
a trade qualification, degree or diploma from an academic institution in
regional Australia that meets the Australian Study Requirement.
Partner Skills (maximum 10 points)

If
the applicant’s accompanying spouse/de-facto partner meets requirements related
to age, skills, and English language proficiency: 10 points

If
the applicant’s accompanying spouse/de-facto partner only meets requirements
related English language proficiency: 5 points
·
If
the applicant is unmarried: 10 points
·
If
the applicant’s spouse/de-facto partner is an Australian permanent or citizen:
10 points
State Nomination (maximum 5 points) –
only applicable for the 190
visa
In case of
the Skilled Nominated visa, those who have been nominated by the local
governing agency of an Australian state or territory can gain 5 additional
points.
