Operating a high-capacity telehandler needs immense training sessions. It isn't easy to master overnight.  Lifting loads, alarm system, and complete knowledge of the machine are required before you are ready for operating the machine on a construction site. In general, there are two types of telehandlers:

  • Rotating Telehandler
  • Non-rotating telehandler

Both the equipment types need rigorous training before practicing them onsite. However, you need to be a "competent person" to deal with these machines. Employers must ensure that the workers are competent enough to work with strict vigilance and safety. The training program includes a degree of complexities to operate a telehandler and the technical tactics to operate them like a pro.

Who is a “Competent person” to use Telehandler?

A competent person is the one who has such practical and theoretical knowledge of the industry and products used, experience, and capacity to learn and apply even the minutest verification on their machine, and should carry out the task safely related to telehandlers. They should be physically fit to carry on their field task.

The employer/supervisors must ensure these factors while during training and final operation. Regular assessments of the trainees are also mandatory to test their knowledge, skills, and practical onsite knowledge. Dieci Ontario gives the onsite workers perfect and practical training on their high-end construction equipment to be competent onsite construction workers/technicians/engineers etc.

The attribute of a Competent Person on the Construction Site:

Any competent person will carry the following attributes to handle telehandlers with perfection:

  • The basic principles of telehandler operation and its use
  • The hazards associated with telehandlers while operating them and strategies to prevent them. Hazards include overturning, colliding with pedestrians, falling of loads, loss of control over the machine, or any insecure attachments made to the telehandler.
  • Daily, weekly, & monthly inspection of the machine to avoid any work-related accidents
  • Maintenance of the telehandler. What are the remedies if it is poorly maintained?
  • Ensure safe use if telehandlers
  • Every telehandler operation must be done under the safest system of the work.
  • Detect any incorrect use of the machine and stop it immediately.
  • Avoid any accidents or incidents which is a result of incorrect planning and operation.
  • The risk involved in operating the machine and keep pedestrians safe in the vicinity of the site.
