ASVAB Word Knowledge - What to Study and How
Words are the building blocks for any language. Therefore, to analyze your ability to communicate in a language, it is vital that your vocabulary is tested. This is the exact purpose of Word Knowledge section of the ASVAB. The ASVAB language segment can be divided into two sections– Paragraph Comprehension and Word Knowledge. The cumulative scores of both these subtests are considered in deriving the VE (Verbal Expression) component of the AFQT (Armed Forces Qualification Test) score.
The Word Knowledge section tests your command over the English language by analyzing your vocabulary skills. Usually, a word is provided and you have to identify its synonym from four multiple choice options. This can be either done in a straightforward manner, like the following:

Remit most nearly means:

c) send back
d) give in
In this example, the right answer is choice (c). Fromthe given answer choices, ‘send back’ is the closest synonym of remit.
Or you could be given a whole sentence, so that you can identify the word meaning with the help of its supporting words. An example of this type of question will be:
Example 2:
When my fidelity was questioned, I became angry.
a) opinion
b) faithfulness
c) tact
d) honor
Use the word ‘angry’ as a clue. Identify that what could it be that if questioned will make a person angry. Here the answer (b) faithfulness is the closest bet and also the right answer!
The only way you can improve your score on ASVAB Word Knowledge is by enhancing your vocabulary. Here are some tips on what to do to quickly broaden your vocabulary:
1. Newspapers and Books
Make it a habit to go through newspapers carefully and read as many books and novels as you can. This will help expand your vocabulary and you will be introduced to some new words each day.
2. List Building
Create a ‘New Word List’. Whenever you come across a new word, just add it to your list. This will help you remember the new words and will also act as a review sheet.
3. SME Technique
SME means Spelling, Meaning and Example. Pick up each word from your ‘New Word List’ and apply the SME technique to it - Memorize its spelling, comprehend the meaning and put it in a sentence. You should also try using these words in your everyday conversation so that they can permeate into your vocabulary.
4. Use Vocabulary builders
Study guides and books specifically designed by experts in language building. It will teach you tips for memorizing and help you understand the meaning of new words with ease.
5. Take Practice Tests
Last but not the least, take as many practice tests as you can. It will give you an insight on what is to be expected on the actual test.
