Asthma comes from the Greek word meaning panting. It is a disease affecting the airways which carry air to and from the lungs. Asthmatics are people who suffer from this chronic condition. It is a long-lasting or recurrent disease. Asthma is a chronic disease that affects the airways and makes breathing difficult. The inside walls of the asthmatic’s airways are swollen or inflamed. Inflammation causes the airways to become narrow, and less air passes through them, both to and from the lungs. This results in problem of breathing.

Mostly children suffer from this chronic disease and especially those who are exposed to tobacco smoke, have low birth weight, are black, and are raised in a low-income environment.

Causes of asthma :
  • Allergies :
Almost all people suffering from asthma have allergies. The very common source of indoor allergens includes animal proteins, cockroaches, dust mites and fungi.

  • Tobacco smoke :
Tobacco smoke has been linked to a higher risk of death due to asthma and also higher risk of, wheezing, and respiratory infections. Adolescent smoking has also been associated with the increases in asthma risk.

  • Environmental Factors :
Pollution, ozone, nitrogen oxide, cold temperatures, high humidity, and sulfur dioxide increase in asthma risk.

  • Obesity :
Overweight adults - those with a body mass index between 25 and 30 - are more likely to have asthma as compared to adults who are not overweight.

  • Pregnancy :
During pregnancy when mothers smoke their children have lower pulmonary function and hence the children may pose higher asthma risk.

  • Stress :
People who undergo stress have higher asthma risk.

Symptoms of asthma :

  • Cough with or without sputum.
  • Shortness of breath.
  • Chest pain.
  • Tightness in the chest.
  • Wheezing.
  • Abnormal breathing patterns.
  • Bluish color to the lips and face.

Treatment :

It has no cure and it is also considered to be a long term disease, but it can be controlled by doing the following :

  • Having a word with your doctor and other health care providers to create and follow an asthma action plan.
  • Avoid the asthma triggers that can worsen your asthma.
  • Medicines are also helpful. It medicines can be taken in pill form or by using a device called inhaler.
  • The medicine inhaled through the inhaler goes directly to the lungs.
  • Long-term medicines should be taken regularly to prevent the symptoms.

Asthma however, cannot be cured completely. There are some ways to manage the symptoms. Try to avoid any smoke ridden areas. Keep your home furnace clean and change filters regularly. Last but not the least; make sure that you take your medication as prescribed by the doctor.
