Artificial Intelligence is 50 years old

by Charlotte Lancaster We believe in Quality
Artificial Intelligence as a research field was Created in the summer of 1956 during a seminal workshop at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire.

It was just a year earlier that when Marvin Minsky, Nathaniel Rochester, Claude Shannon, and John McCarthy proposed that they ought to have a workshop to compile a roadmap about how to make machines think and learn equally to people. The ultimate goal was to discover computational units in order to enable machines to perform commonsense reasoning. Now, John McCarthy is considered the father of AI.

I should notice that the term" Artificial Intelligence" appeared for the first time in the proposal put forth by the previously mentioned scientists. And so this new discipline that will finally captivate everybody's imagination was born.  Artificial Intelligence had its own ups and downs from the previous 50 years. Early success solving little problems in simulation sparked a flurry of predictions regarding super-intelligent machines all around the world before the coming of the 21st century.

Hampered by a lack of a good understanding of how commonsense reasoning operates in people and a lack of computational tools, computers were very slow up until the mid-nineties, AI research expired in the 80s. Many people rushed to dismiss it as nothing more than hot air.

However, science is about proposing and testing new theories in order to locate the very best ones. Considering that the mid-90s, AI research has advanced by leaps and bounds. We finally have a better understanding of how the human brain works and that's helped us to locate and analyze better computational models for AI. These, in turn, have also helped us to understand the functions of the human brain. New techniques such as statistical evaluation are helping intelligent agents to replicate with considerable quantities of data and noisy detectors. Faster computers with vast amounts of storage are allowing us to experiment at more challenging domain names and solve larger problems.

It's true that AI has not yet been able to produce a machine capable of commonsense reasoning. But, by specialization, many AI systems are in reality running our world these days. AI helps us fly planes and drive our cars. It aids doctors to perform the operation.

It helps us locate info in the vastness of the World Wide Web. It helps us find spam email and promptly delete it. It helps our traffic lights and public transportation. It helps us analyze financial markets and also make predictions about the outcome of sports events. It aids in the surveillance of public spaces enhancing safety and security. These are only a tiny sample of this penetration of smart systems in our daily lives. Artificial Intelligence is here to remain and I wager it won't be long before we have the knowledge, approaches, and resources to finally construct learning and thinking machines. Let's wish and hope that such technology would only be used to benefit mankind and not ruin it.
