Getting afraid of ageing is a common phenomenon found in every second individual. The fear is formed by seeing the poor health conditions of our elders and other senior citizens. Aging is a portrait painted over a time – however, it is up to us to decide whether the portrait has to be a poignant or pleasant one. We should never be terrified of old age as it brings along beauty, intelligence and experience.

Why such terror of aging?

Most of us always bury our heads in sand when it comes to accepting the prospects of old age. Most of us are afraid of being weak when we age; however, if efforts are made to stay positive, we end up being healthier during our twilight years. Also, the ageist media end up giving cold shoulder to the old age people. The reason for such an attitude is because of the perception that older people are neither familiar with the advances technology nor in touch with modern business rules. Nevertheless, such perceptions are not true. Only little patience is what needs to be kept while making oldsters learn new ways of doing things.

Another factor that is among the primary contenders in fueling our terrors of ageing is - most of us are not letting an oldster stick to higher echelons of an organization. Many people find it downright unacceptable to see a septuagenarian be a part of higher management. Most never let aged people be part of management due to their lack of understating of modern business techniques; however, how can we ignore their wealth of knowledge, earned by during the duration of service?

Further, the aversion toward aging is such that most of us never put efforts to establish contacts with our grandparents or any other elderly;the belief is buttressed by a study showing that nearly one of every third person under 25 years of age does not have contacts with a person of age 65 and above.

Why the need for showing a positive attitude toward the elderly?

Psychologically speaking, we always refer to the old people as ‘others’ due to their difference in tastes, attitudes and world opinions. Researches point that some cultures (such as China, Japan, etc.) support conjugal family. Such cultures always ingrain respect for the elders in its individuals; the respect generally comes from the fear of mortality. Members of such collectivist communities try to cherish the final years of the elders by making them happy and using their wisdom.
