Are PET Bottles Safe for Pharma Packaging?

by Ricky Martin Marketing Consultant
The Indian pharmaceuticals market is regarded as the world’s third biggest in regard to volume and thirteenth largest in regard to overall value. The industry is one of the rapidly growing domains of the Indian economy, capped at $35 billion).

It is necessary to know packaging is an inherent element component of any product, be it consumer goods or industrial offering. Nowadays, aluminum, glass and plastic are being primarily used for packaging in the pharma industry. However, this change took place over a period. Previously, the favored materials were aluminum and glass. These materials are costly and could not provide economically feasible solutions for packaging of products of mass consumption, and therefore the industry witnessed the arrival of plastic packaging.

Plastic bottles used for pharma packaging are comprised of a special plastic, known as polyethylene terephthalate or PET - a transparent, sturdy and lightweight plastic from the polyester family. It is the same plastic which is widely used for storing and selling packaged drinking water, carbonated soft drinks and soda, amongst other consumable liquid products.

Aluminum, glass and PET are the most sought-after packaging systems for solid oral preparations. Aluminum and plastic collapsible tubes are employed for semi solid formulations and glass or PET for liquid orals and injectable.

PET, one of the most widely used type of plastics, garnered significance in the past few decades and is been largely used in the healthcare domain due to its safety and quality standards. It is typically used by a pharma PET bottle manufacturer for packaging of liquid oral drug formulations and is the widely used and accepted type of plastic used in packaging for pediatric and geriatric drugs.

Plastics, in this case PET, which is used in healthcare products conforms to unbending quality and safety standards, and is examined for being non-toxic, non-carcinogenic, biocompatible and in no form harmful in the biological environment. The safety of PET has been repeatedly exhibited through various studies, supervisory approvals and scientific testing, as well as its extensive use and reception for more than three decades.

PET has been regarded as safe for food and beverage use by health and regulatory agencies all over the world, including the U. S. Food & Drug Administration, Health Canada, and the EU's European Food Safety Authority. The same is the case with liquor PET bottle manufacturer that makes the use of specialized plastic for the storage and packaging.

Irrespective of the type of material used by pharma PET bottle manufacturer, it needs to undergo detailed examination before it is eventually accepted as a package as per ICH (WHO) guidelines. The selection of the packaging, is part of the drug development process, during which time it is tested for leaching and extractability.
