Apprehensions about electronic vapour cigarettes
E-cigs have helped users reduce and even quit the smoking habit. But there is reluctance to accept an e-cigarette as a smoking-cessation device. There are many negatives associated with getting addicted to e-cigs, but even critics accept that when compared to tobacco cigarettes, e-cigs definitely promise better health to smokers.
Electronic vapour cigarettes (e-cigs) are widely being accepted as a healthier alternative to regular tobacco smoking. There are however many disadvantages that are cited when it comes to their usage. Since there are two sides to every coin, it is imperative to understand the pros and cons of a vapour cigarette and then take an informed decision about going for this smokeless option.
E-cigs comprise of an atomizer, a battery and a cartridge of liquid nicotine. With none of the harmful effects of tobacco, these cigarettes simulate the act of smoking conventional cigs. Tobacco smoke is the primary health risk in regular cigarettes. But when you puff on an e-cig, you inhale and exhale vapour and not smoke. You weed out pitfalls like cancer, gum disease, brown teeth, bad breath, coughing and burning your clothes with fallen ash. Unlike a regular cigarette you can take just a few puffs on an electric cig and put it aside for future use. Chain smokers report that e-cigs have helped them reduce smoking. Some users have found themselves giving up smoking entirely.
Those who oppose the branding of electric cigarette as a smoking-cessation device, have the core concern that there is no conclusive evidence to prove an e-cig is effective and safe, due to the lack of testing and research. They contend that despite vapour replacing smoke, it is still the addictive nicotine that an e-cig delivers into the lungs. There are insufficient tests when it comes to studying the safety levels of the liquid nicotine in vapor cigs. The effects of inhaling nicotine vapour over a long period of time are unknown. Health experts still vouch for tested alternatives like lozenge, nasal spray, the nicotine patch and gum, when it comes to giving up smoking.
Regulatory agencies and health experts also argue that e-cigarettes may not produce smoke but they do produce secondhand vapour, the harmful effects of which have not been researched. They cite the example of some users who have complained that the vapour can be irritating to their noses, eyes and throats. It has also been reported that the vapour affects breathing and causes nausea. Critics of e-cigarettes insist that the elderly and children should not be exposed to second hand vapour, until adequate research is carried out and it is declared to be absolutely harmless. Another contention is that e-cigs can actually lead people to consume more nicotine, as they can often be used in areas where traditional cigarettes are banned. Opponents however do concede that the biggest advantage of an e-cig vis-à-vis a traditional cigarette, is the absence of tobacco which is a carcinogen and the cause of cancer.
