Apple’s custom processor and its impact in computer business dynamics

Tech enthusiasts who are following the latest technology updates cannot stop talking about recent developments on Apple’s decision in favor of going for their custom-made ARM processors for their computers. This processor architecture helped them in creating best-performing devices in mobile platforms. Apple is known for its software and hardware ecosystem that work together great. All their devices but the computers used to get powered by their own custom-made chips.  But finally, Apple has decided to end its long partnership with technology giant Intel and also use its own chips for their computers. Apple is one of the biggest names in computers. This decision is supposed to change the dynamics of the processor market in the upcoming days. Anyone who follows Apple and related developments are eager to experience what Apple can achieve in computing performance with this. As they have exceeded people’s expectations for their mobile devices, the hype is sky-high this time around also.

Apple has bitter-sweet experience in computer businesses since the very beginning. Apple started operating in 1976. The business of commercial computers and computers as a science was still immature. There were many design ideas for hardware architecture from many manufactures or researchers. It was a very early stage indeed for all the players in the market. The business of commercial computers started getting taking the market from the 1980s. Apple already had competitions from the likes of IBM and Microsoft. In 1983 Apple launched their ambitious project Apple Lisa which was the first GUI-based personal computer. But the humongous price tag failed the product miserably. 1985 marked the introduction of the Macintosh operating system which started shaping the Apple computer business.

These computers used Motorola’s custom PowerPC processors. This partnership lasted till 1994. Then Apple started their using their homegrown PowerPC processors. It is worth notable that after the deal with Motorola was called off; Motorola’s processor business started showing a steep decline. Today commercial computer processor business of Motorola is nonexistent. So Apple continued with its own PowerPC processor for a decade. There were generations of processors under this architecture.  But not going for Intel processor started hurting their business. Finally, they got a partnership with Intel in 2005. Since then Apple PC business has seen new heights and popularity among consumers. Computer technology news has always been incomplete without Apple.

This latest move from Apple has significance from multiple points of view. Intel is a technology giant. Intel is being used in around 65% of computers around the world. Most of them are Windows and some are Linux and other machines. They are not going to succumb like Motorola with the processor business. It is also a challenge for main competitor Microsoft who has a partnership with Intel to match up to the Apple computers’ performance in every segment. In the last decade, Apple has mastered performance with its ARM-based mobile processors. They are arguably the best when it comes to performance on their smartphones and tablets. The computing world is looking forward to the new performance benchmarks this time around also.
