Apple Moves to Google Cloud and Other Tech News Today
Another day in tech, another day full of news stories! Here’s
our latest for today.
Apple Moves to Google
Cloud
After appointing enterprise star Diane Greene as Senior Vice
President for Google's cloud businesses, it appears the move was a wise one for
Google. According to rumors by CRN, the search engine giant recently scored a
win by convincing Apple to move to their Cloud.
Apple has shifted their iCloud and other services data from
Amazon’s AWS cloud to Google’s cloud platform. In 2015, Brian Nowak, an analyst
working for Morgan Stanley, said that Apple spends more than $1 billion in a
year on Cloud services, and are investing in data centers of their own. Apple
wants to cut its cloud costs and diversify its cloud providers.
Estimated at around $400-$600 million dollars, the deal does
not imply that Apple has completed cut off from Amazon. It simply means that
Apple is preferring to spend more on Google’s cloud than AWS. Both Apple and
Google declined to comment on the news story.
Skype for Web Introduces
Non-Skype Calls
To make Skype more web-friendly, Microsoft has introduced
calls to mobile phones and landlines in the Skype for Web messenger. To make a
call, just click on the ‘Call Phones’ section within the website app. Before
the update, Skype for Web only allowed calls to existing Skype users.
Along with the update, a ‘guest’ feature allows any user to be
invited into a skype conversation, regardless of whether the user has an
account or not. Just click on New – Share Conversation at the bottom of the
contacts list in the Skype web app. Additionally, Skype for Web added the
functionality of displaying images from webpages and playable YouTube videos
within the online messenger.
Instagram to
Prioritize News Feed like Facebook
Instagram announced in a blog post that their news feed will
not be reverse chronological in order, rather the company will rank posts based
on the user.
“To improve your experience, your feed will soon be ordered
to show the moments we believe you will care about the most. The order of
photos and videos in your feed will be based on the likelihood you’ll be
interested in the content, your relationship with the person posting and the
timeliness of the post. As we begin, we’re focusing on optimizing the order —
all the posts will still be there, just in a different order…You’ll see this
new experience in the coming months,” Instagram wrote.
Google Announces Plan
to Boost Mobile-Friendly Webpages in SERPs
Google plans to launch an update to its SERPS, similar to
but not as great as Mobilegeddon, starting May that stresses importance of
website rankings on mobile-friendliness.
