Ankara Fabric Facts

by Sarah Peter Contributor

Ankara is Love! The vibrant prints, the versatility of the fabric, and the evenness. It’s the fabric of choice for many designers because it is readily available, easy to work with and it can withstand the highest temperature from an iron without melting or leaving an undeniable shine. Ankara is commonly known as “Ankara prints,” “African prints,” “African wax prints” “Holland wax” and “Dutch wax” and is a 100% cotton fabric with vibrant patterns. The gorgeous and colorful cloth is primarily associated with the empowering landscapes of Africa because of its meticulous and tribal patterns. The Ankara fabric is extremely versatile, and an assorted range of clothing and new fashion items can be made from it ranging from hats, earrings, clothing pieces, blazers, men/women combo dresses, and shoes to name a few.

To make Ankara an even more versatile fabric, fashion brands and fabric suppliers have manufactured Ankara prints on fabrics like chiffon, silk, spandex for a more diverse range of apparel and clothing pieces. Ankara print fabrics are made through an Indonesian wax-resist dyeing technique called batik. In this technique, methods are used to “resist” the dye from reaching all the cloth, thereby creating a pattern. The lack of divergence in color intensity helps with the determination of the (front) right and (back) the wrong side of the fabric.

The gorgeous Ankara print fabrics can be worn for regular occasions, but most of the fashion experts globally consider it a premium and formal fabric to be worn on those special occasions to represent your heritage and persona. People wear fabric as ‘Asoebi’ for special occasions such as birthdays, weddings, balls, cultural shows, and so forth. Asoebi is a Nigerian word and means “clothes of the family.” Family members, relatives, and close friends usually dress up in similar attire for a special occasion to show their roots.  Here are some facts about Ankara Fabric,

At Tribe 228, sharing the African culture is incredibly important to us. Tribe 228 uses Ankara or Wax Prints as a medium to express their style and façade. Right now, westerners see African culture as this exotic foreign fragile entity that must only be preserved because of the deep roots and history. Most of the culture is misunderstood, and some of it is unknown. As a designer brand based in Africa, and particularly one with origin to the continent, we see this as an opportunity to show people that it is ok to experience other cultures. Ankara fabric is beautiful, it is bold, it speaks to you, and most importantly it gives you the ability to express yourself uniquely. Ankara is a way of life.!
