Anal fistula or fistula-in-ano is an abnormal development of a track or channel between perianal skin and/or rectum or anal canal. It is the canal between the surface of the anus and the skin. It is the cavity filled with pus near anus/rectum and is usually caused due to infection in the inner glands. Fistula normally occurs if the abscesses (assortment of pus) are not cured completely.

Causes of Anal Fistula

There are several causes that lead to this painful situation. These are discussed below.

  • Ano-rectal abscess
  • Anal fissures
  • Piles/ Haemorrhoids
  • Constipation
  • Ulcer/ulcerative colitis
  • Bacterial / viral infection- TB, syphilis, HIV
  • Surgical complications
  • Sexually transmitted disease/ trauma
  • Congenital abnormalities
  • Unhygienic conditions
  • Unhealthy lifestyle of people
  • Faecal material clogs
  • Pelvic Syndrome
  • Inflammatory bowel movements
  • Junk food
  • Roadside eateries
  • Dehydration causes hard stool that damages the skin and the tissues near anus.
  • It is the result of past or present abscess which causes immense discomfort and agony.

Major Symptoms of Anal Fistula

There are several symptoms of anal fistula. The major ones are discussed below.

  • Skin irritation around the anus – itching (pruritis ani) and burning sensation
  • Discharge of pus
  • Weight loss
  • Nausea
  • Fatigue
  • Pain during bowel movements
  • Peri anal discharge
  • Constipation
  • Blood while passing stools
  • Swelling
  • Bleeding

Dietary Treatment of Anal Fistula

Diet in Anal Fistula is one of the important issues, which can help to cure this painful situation to a huge extent.

  • Fresh fruit juice, especially of lemon, orange etc.
  • Green salads of cucumber, carrots
  • Fruits like guava, papaya, orange, and apple
  • Green and leafy vegetables, including bottle guard, spinach etc.
  • Sprouted beans and cereals
  • Chapattis with high bran content
  • Boiled rice and cooked pulses
  • Raisins and figs soaked overnight
  • Buttermilk and curd
  • Warm water in the morning is highly recommended.
  • Gluten free diet is an aid in a fistula.
  • The major food items to avoid are chillies, spicy and oily items, tea, coffee etc.

These, if not avoided may result in more discomforts, pain, itching and burning sensation.

Home Remedies of Anal Fistula

1. Aloe Vera

Aloe Vera is a natural plant that can be used externally as well as internally. If externally applied, it covers up the fistula by preventing the further infection and thus promoting the healing process.

2. Ghee and Warm Milk

One tablespoon of ghee and a glass of warm milk is the best cure, which can stop the swelling and oozing in a few days. Cod liver oil can be applied topically.

3. Nuts

Nuts like almonds, cashews, brazil nuts etc are inflammatory in nature that causes irritation in the intestines and may lead to constipation. So, it is highly recommended to avoid them.

4. Sitz Bath and External Application

Sitting in a tub of hot water with antiseptic lotion is most recommended. It will relieve the discomfort and the pain felt due to the cut and the pus. It can simply be created by filling a bath tub with warm water and sitting in it. Putting an natural antiseptic lotion will help to fight the bacteria.

Natural Treatment of Anal Fistula

1. Triphala

It is a unique blend of three herbs viz., Terminalia chebula (haritaki), Terminalia bellerica (bibhitaki) and Emblica officinalis (amalaki). It finds great usage in the disease owing to its laxative, anti-inflammatory and wound healing properties.

2. Guggul (Commiphora Mukul)

It is itself denoted as ‘gunjo vyadhe gurdati rakshati’ in the ancient literature that means ‘one that gives relief from variety of ailments’. It is used in combination with triphala as it has great potential to reduce anal inflammation.

3. Nirgundi (Vitex Nirgundo)

It is generally used in the form of oil to provide analgesic and antibacterial action. It is also a rich source of Vitamin C that accelerates the healing of the fissure.

4. Curcumin (Curcuma Longa)

It is commonly known as ‘haldi’. It is a universal panacea in the Indian household. It is a natural antibiotic with great wound healing capacity.

Anal fistula causes throbbing pain and distress. One should opt for these remedies to avoiding the intake of extremely strong antibiotics and pain killers in order to get rid of this painful situation.
